Layman Posts $10,000 Appeals Bond in Cat Theft Case
Benton Layman, convicted in 52nd District Court of theft of cats from Dudley Bros., posted a $10,000 appeals bond and awaits a hearing before the State Court of Criminal Appeals. Judge Truman E. Roberts sentenced him to 10 years in prison on May 8. Bond sureties include Les Proctor Buck Steinert and Richard Layman. Layman has posted $2,500 bonds in several other complaints.

Summer School Starts Monday at Comanche High
Summer school at Comanche High School begins Monday May 25. Registration urged for those not yet enrolled. Courses require minimum 10 students and advance tuition. Each student may earn one credit. Session runs May 25 to July 10 with 8 am to 12 noon classes totaling 140 hours for 1 unit. May 25 to June 17 offers 70 hours for half unit.

Johnson Makes Surprise Visit To Co Ops Banquet
President Lyndon B. Johnson arrived unannounced at a rural electric cooperative banquet in Washington. The May 12 event drew about 100 attendees including lawmakers, White House staff, and officials from the Federal Power Commission Rural Electrification Administration and Fort Worth figures. Comanche residents voted 646 to 37 approving a municipal water contract with Lake Proctor sources. De Leon and Dublin also approved on the same day, while Gorman residents will vote May 23. The plan includes a 16 inch line from a central plant to Comanche and an 18 month construction horizon.

Comanche High School prepares to award diplomas to fifty three seniors led by top graduates Dorothea Byrd and Letha Dunn. Russell W. Berry, 24, named new head basketball coach and CHS teacher, will also coach football and pursue a master's in social studies at Howard Payne College. Berry, Abbott native and former All-State athlete, succeeds Ray Smith who left for the University of Corpus Christi.

Summer Baseball To Begin June 1
Plans are set for the opening of the 1964 summer base ball and recreational program in Comanche with the start scheduled for Monday night June 1. A managers meeting is set for Tuesday night May 26 at 8 o'clock at the Veterans Building to finalize details. Coach Ray Smith is again named City Recreational Director for the season, funded by the Comanche Jaycees Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club. The program is open to all school age boys and a list of teams and players is provided with contact instructions for boys not yet listed.

The city of Comanche installs 10 new type parking meters on the west side square for a trial. They accept a penny, nickel or dime and provide 2 minutes 1 hour or 2 hour parking options. City Superintendent John Jolink says the meters align with city policy to advance municipal progress.
