Walter Wadsworth and Dan Grayson announce the grand opening of Walter and Dans Truck Stop on the Ft Worth Highway near Melody Drive In. The new station offers Premier products and 24 hour service and invites friends old and new to visit Friday and Saturday May 15 16. The Comanche Chamber of Commerce also conducts a labor survey within a thirty mile radius mailed to local residents to assess available workers to attract future industry and keep youth in Comanche.
The editorial urges Comanche residents to vote for a water contract with Lake Proctor. It notes a past drought, promises ample water for 70 years, and states taxes will not rise. polls open 8 am to 7 pm at City Hall. It stresses property owners eligible to vote and urges full turnout.
Sammy Marshall, a popular Comanche postal employee, is chosen as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop No. 47 sponsored by the First Methodist Church. He replaces Gilmore Durham, who has led the troop for eight years. about 15 boys are active in Troop 47.
The Miss Comanche beauty pageant offers a $50 savings bond prize. Contestants aged 18 and older must reside in the Comanche Independent School District and be unmarried. Junior division includes ages 15-17 with the same rules. Entries close June 1 with winners crowned in an event June 6.
Burk's Museum at Burks Museum on N. Austin St. will open Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. for the summer season starting May 17. Weekday visits remain available by appointment, state A P.
Gartman View Baptist Church hosts an all day Homecoming and singing on Sunday May 17 with multiple out of county singers. The program begins at 10 30 a m and lunch will be served on the grounds.
Margaret Burks invites the public to visit and browse both old and new exhibits at her venue. The note extends a cordial greeting to guests to come by and meet the Burks.
Comanche High School Class of 1964 will hold baccalaureate service in the school auditorium Sunday May 17. Rev Henry Chambers will deliver the sermon, with invocations and benediction by listed pastors and readings by Rev Jim McCall. Music directed by Jack King will accompany graduates including Billy Albin and many others.
Gustine Salvation Army announces the 1964 annual campaign from May 20 to May 29. Chairman Roland Miller says Bill Miller will head the drive with a committee including McDonald Applewhite I C Willingham J A Thurmond and Mrs A C Christ. Over fifty residents received emergency aid last year with no waiting or red tape.
County Democrats met in Comanche for their convention with 64 delegates selected from 28 voting boxes. They passed resolutions endorsing Lyndon B. Johnson for president and John Connally for governor and instructed their State Convention delegation to back a Johnson ticket and Connally leadership at the national level. A memorial for John F. Kennedy was adopted. Delegates named include W I Lane Fleming chairman and 14 others bound under unit rule.
Mrs. Gordon Barrett returns home with her son-in-law Rev and Mrs W I Lee and children after two months in Odessa. The Lees accompany Mrs Barrett for a brief visit with kin and friends upon arrival.
A special Little League gathering is scheduled for Friday night May 15 at 7 30 at the Jaycee Building. Coach Ray Smith will head the Summer Little League and calls for full attendance by managers and sponsors as team rosters are formed and managers recruited.
Next week The Chief will publish its annual CHS Senior Edition with student editors Linda Davis and Kay Burton. The issue will showcase portraits of Comanche High School graduates, plus school news features and ads, a longtime subscriber favorite for 28 years. Correspondents should submit news copy early in the week.
On Friday May 15 the Sidney High School 1964 Senior Class will hold graduation in the High School Auditorium at 8 00 p m. Valedictorian Steven Pinkard salutatorian Carolyn Guthrie and other classmates Brenda Scott Dale Merworth Gary Hill J C Cook and Bill Scott are listed. Paul Faulkner Dean of Men Abilene Christian College will speak. Kathy Spalding will play piano as the school choir performs two numbers. J C Cook delivers the invocation Carolyn Guthrie gives the salutatorian address Bill Scott reads the class prophecy Gary Hillis presents the class will Steven Pinkard delivers the valedictorian address Superintendent Ray Pruitt introduces the speaker and presents awards. Diplomas are presented by Tommy Mazurek school board president.
