The 1941 Texas Almanac shows Texas population at 6,414,824 from the 1940 census, a 10.1 percent rise. oil’s prominence grows beyond agriculture, with Spindle Top near Beaumont marking the start of substantial activity. It details city populations, Comanche County trends, and notes Dallas, Houston, and Fort Worth among large Texas cities.
Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Purcella and children spent a weekend in Fort Worth Dallas and Terrell. Mrs. Purcella visited her mother Mrs. Nancy Brown, the first meeting since 1912.
Pauline Frey, a junior home economics student at Texas Tech, was elected Candle editor of Phi Upsilon Omicron for the coming year. She is the daughter of Rev. E. R. Gordon of Comanche.
Charlie Marshall of Howard Payne leads a mile relay squad that won the college division at Drake Relays in Des Moines after earlier triumphs including the Texas Relays in Austin. Each team member received a seventeen jewel watch engraved Drake Relays.
Mrs. Fred Rogers, seriously hurt in an automobile crash weeks ago, is slowly recovering at home in Sweetwater. Relatives from Comanche including Mrs. Dewey Dodson Mrs. A J Coker Mrs. L W Hicks and Mr and Mrs Bud Hicks visited Sunday.
Pat Cagle, former high school principal and coach now at Brownwood High School, went to Comanche on Tuesday to advocate for Gerald Mann's United States Senate bid.
Eugene Seymour formerly of Sherman has become permanent line man for the Texas Telephone Company in Comanche. Karl Shock, manager, announces the appointment. Mrs Seymour and their one year old son plan to arrive from Sherman next week.
Three members of the 1941 Comanche High School graduating class plan to enlist in the United States Army Saturday after the final graduation exercises Friday night. R. L. Edwards, John David Milton, and Glenn Hicks have already arranged to sign up Saturday morning. They join the aviation corps. Paul P. Pirkle of Camp Bowie visited the Roberson sisters sun.
A Thursday picnic at Lake Eanes Park honored three Comanche High School girls leaving for home this weekend. Betty Perkins Anna Katherine Wetzel and Mary Louise Manning were celebrated as games and a lunch followed with many attendees listed as Tyson Phillips George Ollie Fletcher L B Pate Harold Nutt Allen Young Eugene Willis James Gill Wayne Wilhelm Jimmie Roberts Sue McDonald Naomi Vineyard Ann Boyd Louise Phillips Irma Lee McPherson and Lucilie Phillips. Sponsors were Mr and Mrs R W Pate and Mr and Mrs Artie Taber.
R. B. Adams, formerly of Gustine, moves from Jefferson Farm Security Administration to Canton Texas after three years with the Jeffer son office. An A&M graduate, Adams will continue in Farm Security work at Canton with similar duties.
James Martin of Comanche earned a Tarleton State College honor Roll distinction for the second grading period. Registrar Gabe Lewis noted fewer than ten percent of students reach this level, requiring a normal load and at least an 80 in every subject.
Relatives of the D. Charles Clarke family gathered Saturday night as Mrs. Wallie Westmore of Los Angeles screened family movies at the Presbyterian Church. Out of town visitors included Robert St. Clair and Mrs. Will Payne of McAllen, adding to the social notes.
Mrs. J. C. Ross of Comanche encloses a renewal check for The Chief newspaper noting she enjoys reading it and does not want to miss issues after a long period without subscriptions.
