William C. Chilton, chairman of the Comanche County War Bond and Stamp sales, urged countywide participation at a district court meeting in Co manche. May quota is set at 17 200 dollars as committees were appointed in local communities. Comanche residents learn Alton Henry Hall Electricians Mate Second Class U S Navy is missing after Manila Bay engagement. Mehaffeys Announce Birth of Son Lewis Eskel

Mr and Mrs Glenn Mehaffey of Gorman announce the birth of a son, Lewis Eskel, on May 6. The newborn weighed 172 pounds. Dr and Mrs Dewitt Claunch are at Ayers Massachusetts per a letter to Mr and Mrs Sutton Dudley. The Claunches say the former Comanche physician with the U S Army expects to stay a few weeks.

Garrett Not To Run For Congress

Judge Clyde L. Garrett of East land says he will not seek a congressional seat. He has accepted a post with Lowell Mellett, Administrative Assistant to President Roosevelt, and will work with Jesse H. Jones in the Department of Commerce for the national victory effort.

Farm Checks Totals Over Seventy-Six Thousand This Week

Comanche County farmers received 26584.0 in government checks this week per the local AAA office. More than 72000 had already been paid out of a total of 175000.00 to be distributed. Checks arrive almost daily, says E L Pierson secretary of the Comanche County ACA.

Wheat quota approved by Comanche County farmers in 1942

Comanche County wheat producers voted 86 percent in favor of a 1942 marketing quota. National totals show 73 percent approval. Parity payment stands at 13.45 cents per bushel with a 9.5 cent conservation payment. compliant farmers receive 23 cents per bushel.

Death of Lee Confirmed and RAF Pilot Jim Bob Lee Remembered

A Comanche family confirms the death of Pilot Officer James Robert Lee of the Royal Air Force, who died in an aircraft collision near Cold Aston, Gloucestershire on 8 April 1942. The Air Council sent condolences and noted his burial at Little Rissington Churchyard on 14 April 1942. A memorial poem by Joe C. Carnes accompanies the letter.

Nearly 17 000 Receive Sugar Ration Books

During four days of registration 16 859 county residents registered for War Ration Book No 1. Of the total, 291 could not receive a book for excessive sugar, and 2 250 stamps were removed. Retailers wholesalers and institutional users also registered, with about 4 700 registering at Comanche.

Comanche has donated 211 dollars of the county Navy Relief Fund total 360 dollars with De Leon adding 114 50 and more expected. Gustine and Sidney have not reported and county chairman Karl Shock urges remaining donors to contribute this week to cover a 45 dollar deficit.

Welfare Office Aids Crowell After Tornado Disaster

After a tornado in Crowell Texas on April 28 destroying 200 houses and damaging 80 percent of buildings at least eleven people were killed and over 125 injured. About 1600 were left homeless. Joe B. Owen led a relief effort with emergency feeding for 1000, diverting surplus school lunch commodities from Dallas Fort Worth Lubbock and San Angelo. Trucks carried flour prunes beans dehydrated soup canned pork and beans egg yolks and apples. Federal local and volunteer agencies including the Army Red Cross and Rotary Club cooperated on the two week feeding program.

Revival Outlines Comanche Methodist Week of Services

Rev. John Neal of Huntsville will preach the Methodist revival in Comanche starting May 24 at 11 a.m. Rev. Loyd Sanders to lead music and youth work, with Rev. A Bryson English urging attendance. A Tuesday rally at Comanche High School drew crowds for wartime morale. J B Allcorn chaired as Lt Col Faulkner from Camp Bowie and Roy Johnston of the Brownwood USO spoke. The Dixie Division Band entertained with several acclaimed numbers.

Comanche Chief Blackberries Headed for Fourth Canning Season

Walter Durham, manager of the Durham Berry Plant, plans the fourth season for Comanche County berries. First berries to market within a week, peak around June 10, with expected crop quality and prices higher than last year. The firm canned 15,000 cases last season and will also reopen its blackeyed pea canning in July, possibly processing peas in the hull.

17 Cars Scrap Iron Shipped From Here

Comanche reports a week of heavy shipments including 17 cars of scrap iron and multiple truckloads of bones scrap rubber and metals sent to war material factories. Sol Hoff man says loading will continue through May in cooperation with national dealers to keep factories at top speed. His biggest weekly purchase was 12 910 pounds of sera iron and 104 pounds of meta for 69 28 dollars to Ed Boswell.
