By William Canton the poem describes a crow perching on a naked ash tree enjoying the sunrise. The crook of April hints at fresh grass, daisies, and chestnut blossoms as the season risks late frost. The crow, with rakish eye, faces the bright day while its plumage bears scars from past shots.
The Comanche Band earned third place and a $25 prize at the Heart of Texas Jersey Show in Dublin on Wednesday. Brady captured first, Ranger second, with entrants from DeLeon Cross Plains and Hamilton. Comanche’s delegation included Mr and Mrs Harmon Howard and many supporters.
The May 22 grammer school graduation program lists March Mrs H B Moore and Rev Gordon Barrett services with pupils speeches and diplomas. Graduates include Estelle Morgan Aubrey Carver Grace Todd Mary E Jones and many others. 32 students will receive diplomas at Comanche High School May 24 with Valedictorian Maurine McNatt and Salutatorian J B Dupuy. The commencement week begins May 24 with baccalaureate preached by Dr C C Klingman and a service in the high school auditorium.
The State Health Department and Federal program launch free diphtheria immunizations in Comanche County on May 19 at the high school auditorium. Dr J O Lane, county health officer, leads efforts with Miss Jean Dunnett coordinating countywide outreach and Mothers Club involvement. A physical exam for new school entrants and second-dose vaccinations on June 9 accompany the diphtheria toxoid offer, with optional smallpox vaccination for interested parents.
A stage vignette features Eloie and a grandpa turning 96 amid light banter about aging. A quick parental dig and a running cold add comic contrast as a brash orator questions the fate of the old-fashioned girl.
Gardenias once costly to kings and captains were offered at fifteen cents each by a sidewalk peddler in Times Square this week. Nearby another peddler sold small bunches of sweet peas for five cents. A horse fell into a manhole at 44th Street and Broadway drawing a crowd of thousands in midtown Manhattan. A truck driver used a rope sling to pull the horse free as firemen arrived with little to do, joking about streetwork skills.
City of Comanche audit by R. K. Shelton covers May 1 1923 to April 30 1931. Total eight year taxes collected amount to 204676.86 with 9513.76 outstanding delinquent mainly in real estate and personal property. Delinquencies by year listed. 1919 best year with 7.48 still delinquent. City indebtedness totals 219000.00 at 4 to 6 percent interest.
The Baggett School will close Friday May 22 with an all day community gathering. A program by the school children a area and picnic lunch at noon and a ball game in the afternoon are planned with Miss Beatrice Robinson as principal.
The John Tarleton College diploma ceremony lists Thomas Jackson of Sipe Springs among graduates. In Comanche General Delivery Pat Sullivan Marvin Guthrie Mrs M J Sullivan and Will Schwartz are to receive a Ritz family pass on Monday May 18.

Six criminal cases and one civil suit filled four court days with one acquittal one suspended sentence two fines a fine and jail time and a hung jury. Guilty pleas included three convictions. Notable cases: Huff will contest verdict Polston fined 25 dollars Bishop fined 62.60 Edwards fined 1 dollar and 10 days jail Steele turkey theft not guilty Parson turkey theft guilty two years suspended Sanford unlawful liquor sale jury deadlocked. Three rape cases expected next week.
John Sullivan, longtime Hamilton High School athletic coach, was elected principal after Cecil Nix became school superintendent. Arth ur L. Bently had headed the district for seven years. Mrs. Sullivan was re-elected as high school teacher.
The Howard Payne Volunteer Band presents a pageant Christ in America at the Baptist Church on Sunday evening May 17 under the Baptist Women’s Missionary Society. Thirty characters participate, per Mrs. E. E. Anthony. Comanche residents O. O. Brightman A. P. Cox L. C. Burt I. C. Bailey receive Ritz family passes for Sunday afternoon May 17.

The Comanche County School Board outlined a ten unit plan for high school consolidation and explained steps required after grouping approval. Units include Sipe Springs Sidney Gustine DeLeon Proctor Edna Hill and Lamkin with rules on when and how districts may consolidate and tax elections.
The ladies bath house at the free swimming pool at Lake Eanes was completed this week. N. N. Durham oversaw the erection and says the pool now offers a modern resort experience. New features include a slide in the kiddies pool and four picnic tables.
Rev Montie Davis of DeLeon Baptist Church will deliver the baccalaureate sermon for Gustine High School seniors on Sunday May 31 according to O BR Rose Supt The Gustine School will close Friday May 29 as one of the county’s last sessions to end.
Jack and Odis Clayton shipped fleece from eight DeLaine sheep to the A and M Experiment Station for scouring and testing. The fleece averaged 20 pounds and 2.5 inch length with excellent quality. Under agreement the Claytons will shear the same sheep on May 2 next year and send the clip to the station to determine yield length and grade for a year.
Mr Walker outlines a plan offering at least 1.6 million dollars in ports and a 1000 dollar per consolidation grant. The state would cover half the transportation costs for each district up to 400 dollars annually, with decisions on ward or elementary school locations left to local boards.
