Burks Museum to Open May 16 in Comanche Texas

Burks Museum starts its 1971 summer season on Sunday May 16 at 2 p.m. Owner A P Burks plans to fire up a wood burning steam thrasher for visitors. The 12 690 item collection spans private Texas relics from farm tools to early transportation and household pieces with the Comanche County Courthouse log structure as a highlight. Admission 50 cents adults 25 cents children.

Six Voting Places To Be Used In Election Tuesday

Comanche County voters will vote Tuesday May 18 1971 to accept or reject four proposed Texas Constitution amendments. Precincts can consolidate to at least one box per commissioner’s area, with voting in any open box. County Judge Fred Hall notes savings and lists Newburg as a site along with De Leon Gustine Sidney Proctor and Comanche.

Upper Leon District Installs Lake Proctor Air Compressor

The Upper Leon River Municipal Water District activated an air compressor atop Proctor Dam on Thursday April 22 as part of an upgrade program to improve water quality. The unit operates 24 hours for 30 days and later on a scheduled basis to reduce manganese taste and odor and stabilize water temperatures. This marks the third such system in Texas and was approved by the State Health Department.

Rabid Skunk Declared Rabid Near Sidney

Comanche County reports its first confirmed rabid animal in some time. E L Frazier said a skunk killed Sunday by his wife on their porch was deemed rabid by the Department of Public Health after the head was sent to Austin. The couple lives about a mile west of the Sidney store.

Frances Lockwood recounts how copper pennies arrived with the railroad and changed pricing in Comanche Texas. The 1890s influx followed the Fort Worth Rio Grande line depot opening and the Baxter Brothers New York Cash Store introducing penny items. Maidens Represent Comanche In Abilene State Track Meet

Coach Leta Andrews leads six Indian Maidens from Comanche at the state track meet in Abilene joining 180 girls and 96 relay teams. The Maidens compete in 440 and 880 relays and the mile relay in Class A with several schools posting faster times. Janet Brightman may miss events due to a leg injury as finals are set for 2 p.m. Saturday.

Cemetery Working Slated Saturday For Oakwood

A community work day is planned at Oakwood Cemetery on Saturday May 15 to beautify the grounds. City Secretary John Beaty notes the event is sponsored by the Cemetery Committee with City Council backing. Volunteers are asked to bring their own tools and may expect ice water and cold drinks provided by the city.
