Tragic fall from pickup claims 7 year old Paul Mitcham

Paul Mitcham a Comanche first grader died after falling from a moving pickup about 214 miles west of Comanche on US Highway 67 377 near Brysonville He suffered a head injury and died at Mims Memorial Hospital His mother Catharine Mitcham and pickup driver Herman Rauhut assisted him at the scene Dale Scott and his wife helped rush him to the hospital State Patrolman Don Stout investigated Paul's teachers described him as a bright active boy with choir involvement and he was to attend a class picnic canceled for Monday His funeral was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Comanche near his family background includes grandparents and siblings with a service conducted by Rev William M Logan Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park Dallas.

Vacation Bible School At East Side Church

East Side Baptist Church hosts Vacation Bible School from May 3 to June 4 with sessions 8 30 a m to 11 30 a m. Registration is Saturday May 29 at 10 00 a m and commencement on Saturday June 5 at 7 30 p m for ages 2 through 17 invited.

City To Be Closed Monday Memorial Day Observance

Comanche merchants plan closures Monday May 31 for Memorial Day. The post office will be closed and no mail will be delivered. Service stations and grocery stores stay open for customers. Memorial Day is an official Chamber of Commerce holiday.

Dairy 0 To Host Grand Opening On Brownwood Highway

Dairy 0 on the Brownwood Highway announces a two day grand opening Friday and Saturday. Gerald Green, owner operator, says the restaurant has been remodeled inside and out and seating capacity doubled. A new soda fountain and refrigerated air conditioning were added. An ad in this issue lists the opening specials.

Summer School Begins Monday in Comanche Public Schools

Summer School starts Monday May 31 in Comanche Public Schools with sessions in High School for American history Civics English II English NT from 8 to noon. Driver Education offers three daily slots. Elementary grades 6 7 8 focus on Math and Language Arts. Report briefly to High School Lunchroom. requests to attend another district must be made before June 1.

Comanche Chief Votes to Publish on Thursdays Starting Year Ninety Nine

The Comanche Chief marks its 99th year and will shift publication from Friday to Thursday. Newsstands and post offices will carry the issue Wednesday afternoon. A 5:00 p.m. Tuesday deadline applies to news and ads to meet the earlier date.

Gustine FFA Rodeo Invitation Weekend

The Gustine FFA Rodeo runs May 27 to 29 at the Gustine rodeo arena with nightly grand entries at 8 p.m. A street parade Thursday at 6 30 p.m. and a Saturday horse parade at 5 p.m. plus a homecoming chicken supper at 6 p.m. Events include bareback bronc riding barrel races calf riding and high school tie down roping. Admission is 50 cents adults 25 cents students.

Membership Drive Set By Friends of Library

Mrs. Dan Mims president of the Friends of the Comanche Public Library announces the annual membership drive starting next Wednesday morning June 2 in Comanche and nearby areas. Sixty volunteers will work to reach a 500 member goal with supporting memberships at five dollars and voting memberships at one dollar to fund new books for a future library building. A square booth will host drive efforts and volunteers will contact residents or collect dues if not approached.

Four Comanche Educators Retire After Long Careers

Four teachers and administrator in the Public Schools of Comanche retire this week. C. E. Irby, El ementary principal, with 34 Texas years. Earlean Irby with 27 years in state service. Mabel Boyd with 36 years. Edna McPherson with 41 years. Total 148 years in Texas public schools and 58 in Comanche. A reception honoring them will be held Thursday night May 27 from 7:30 to 9:00 pm in the new elementary school library.
