Local items promote various services and products including fertilizers from Centee on aL ER Coiee, Plenamins vitamins at Duk Pharmacy, and Rexall vitamins. Also offers on TV sets and antennas at C E Drug Appliance. Community events run May 23 28 and May 15 at Comanche swimming pool with clean-up drives and the Garden Club project.
Curtis Wilhelm, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Wilhelm, will graduate from Texas A. and M. College Station on May 27 with a B S degree in entomology. He worked five years while studying at San Angelo College and A&M, holding jobs from a creamery to a department store, and plans to become an insect control specialist in irrigated cotton near Lubbock after June 1.
The swimming pool at Mount Sunday will open for the day in the afternoon. Prices will be 15 and 35 cents for swimmers aged years, with a new filtering plant and vacuum cleaning facility recently installed to improve cleanliness.
Judy Moore presents her pupils in an annual dance revue at the high school auditorium Thursday night May 11. Sponsored by the West Ward PTA. Tickets on sale soon with 25 cents for students and 50 cents for adults. Details to follow next week.
A singing meeting will be held at the Comaanche Church of Christ in the afternoon on May 15. Minister M. I. Manchester extends the invitation to all to attend.
Several hundred Boy Scouts Explorers and leaders will pitch tents Friday for the Spring Camp-O-Ra at Lake Eanes Comanche. Field events Saturday include fire by flint and steel friction string burning pancake cooking tent pitching first-aid drills pioneering and comedy events. J C Golden of Stephenville heads the East District Camping and Activities Committee and oversees the two day activity with Scoutmasters from multiple towns and local arrangements chaired by Joe Tupin. Public invited to Court of Honor and Camp-Fire Friday night.
Comanche Cub Scout Pack No. 15 plans a Cub Scout Circus at the High School Gym on Tuesday May 17 at 7 30 p m. Four dens will host side shows and all take part in the Center Ring Show. Admission is 5 cents with side show charges of 10 cents. Proceeds go to summer park activities and the Pack Committee and Den Dads run the concession.
A Thurs night entry at Gore and Son's Red and White Grocery on Fort Worth Highway saw the side door pried open. Twelve dollars in change and merchandise valued at 350 to 600 dollars were stolen including cigarettes tobacco coffee sugar and a high priced adding machine. Comanche Brown and Mills County officers cooperate to pursue clues in a string of nearly two dozen burglaries across the three counties.
Donald Salter formerly of Comanche now living in Bagdad Arizona was among 14 life saving heroes honored by the Joseph A Holmes Safety Association in Washington. Salter, a heavy duty mechanic for Bagdad Copper Corp, saved a fellow worker sprayed with burning oil when an electric shovel switch exploded. He pulled the man from the machine and doused the flames, and is the son in law of Mr. and Mrs. Orb Flanagan of Comanche.
The annual Homecoming at Taylor's Chapel is scheduled for Sunday June 5 replacing the usual Memorial Day observance. Organizers urge community members to join in the celebration with Mr and Mrs Louis Herelik and their family noted among participants.
Comanche County records its heaviest general rainfall in months with totals from Sipe Springs to Pettit Newburg Indian Gap, official two day reading 1.74 inches. Soil Conservationist John Simpson calls the rain a life saver for corn and grain sorghum while noting many small grains had survived the drought but most were abandoned.
Rainfall drenched the area with 1.3 inches in fifteen minutes late Wednesday, boosting water for livestock and filling farm ponds. Peanut and cotton growers, plus late sorghum crops, await ground conditions to plant as seed houses stay busy. A funnel-shaped cloud touched down near Newbury at 5:30 PM, damaging Kenneth Carnes farm 12 miles south of Comanche. a barn fell, debris damaged a car and a tractor.
The Comanche County ASC extends final dates for operators and owners to release 1955 peanut acreage to May 19 1955 and for filing an adjustment application to May 19 1955. Producers may visit the ASC office in Comanche to sign forms by 5 00 p m on May 19 1955 to release acreage or apply for adjustment.
Acting state health officer L P Walter ordered indefinite postponement of Salk vaccine polio immunization in Texas pending a U S Health Service re appraisals of vaccine lots and manufacturing safeguards. Dr E E Blackwood Comanche County Health Officer notes Houston cases and urges residents to await further developments.
J. R. Wright son of Mr and Mrs C D Wright won valedictorian honors for Sidney High School class of 1955 with a four year average of 91.8. Salutatorian was Ernest Woolsey and top girl Loretta Grimes. Commencement at the Sidney High Auditorium on May 20 with Baccalaureate May 18 delivered by T R Havins of Howard Payne.
The mayor designates May 23 to May 28 as Clean Up Week in It and asks property owners to place trash on curbs for truck pickup. On Wednesday May 25 the Chamber of Commerce will lead pickups and needs volunteers to drive and work on the trucks. Volunteers should report to the Chamber of Commerce at the courthouse with names, and workers from firms should also submit names. Workers meet at City Hall at 8:00 a.m. for assignments. completion expected by noon.
Gustine High School schedules Baccalaureate for Sunday night May 15 at 8 at the Gustine auditorium with Minister L L Wilson as speaker on Essentials of Good Success. Commencement follows Friday May 26 at 8 with W B Russell addressing graduates. diplomas presented by Claude McPherson and Superintendent Sartor. 31 seniors listed. Norma Jean Reese valedictorian with 94.8 average, Melvin Wilson salutatorian at 94.44.
The annual Chief Senior Edition ships next week with co editors Jean Enn Stanton and Louanna Cox, notable CHS seniors. Faculty advisors Mrs. E. Jorhtfoot and Mrs. Oftie ux guide the issue, featuring sixty-one graduate photos and school life depictions.
