The 1946 Comanche High School senior class recalls grade school memories, early pranks, and ironclad bonds. It notes teachers, class presidents, football and social events, and a memorable Junior year tragedy, closing with senior aspirations and activities.
Mrs. Sarah Caroline Osborne Dowdy, 85, longtime Comanche County resident, died May 8 at her daughter Mrs. FE. E. Thomas’s home. Funeral held at First Baptist Church with Rev. John G. Lambrides. interment Oakwood Cemetery. Survived by husband Joseph Dowdy (deceased), two of six children Otis C. Dowdy of Dallas and Mrs. Thomas, nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. J. H. Williford of a prominent family will be held at 2:30 PM this Friday at Comanche Funeral Home. Interment follows at Oakwood Cemetery. She died early Thursday at her daughter Mrs. Jesse Odell’s home after an extended illness.
Mrs. J. P. Hoff of Fort Worth formerly of Comanche suffered a severe back injury in a fall while visiting her son John Hoff in Houston. She has returned home and remains confined to her room. her son Bea Hoff of Comanche visited during illness.
Beattie classes from Texas toured Carlsbad Caverns and Balmorhea State Park spending their first night in Carlsbad. Saturday 10 am a group of over 500 students began a special statewide trip visiting McDonald Observatory on Sunday and crossing into Old Mexico via Ojinaga before returning home. The trip list includes Bennie Ravenshine Ruthie Fisher Oleta Fisher Martha Johnson Junior Horton Jerald Warren LeRoy Laughlin Neal Williams Dean Welch Shirley Rumfield Frankie Keith Nelda Nabors Pete Smith and others.
Roy J. Peace, longtime supervisor for the Comanche County Farm Security Administration, is appointed by the City Council to replace the late Hilbert Stewart as caretaker and water pumper at Lake Eanes. Citizens approve the selection and praise his past work and character.
Mrs. Jessie Horner Tuggle enters the race for District Clerk citing a long secretarial background in Comanche County and Fort Worth. She notes illness in her family delayed her decision but now seeks support on her merits and experience, asking voters to investigate her qualifications with local lawyers and officials.
O Brightman, recently seriously ill at his home, was taken to a Brownwood hospital for treatment last Friday. He was brought back home on Wednesday but remains in a serious condition.
L. M. Batton aged 75 longtime Comanche resident and former grammar school caretaker died at home Sunday May 5 after a lengthy illness. He served 13 years at Comanche Grammar School and was succeeded by his son Emmett. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Comanche Funeral Home with Rev. John G. Lambrides officiating. Interment in White Point Cemetery. He was born December 28 1870 in Atlanta Georgia and married Minnie Perry December 20 1909. He is survived by wife Minnie a son Emmett Batton of Comanche a daughter Mrs Carl Allen of Dallas and two grandchildren Jerry and Judy Allen. The Battons had lived in Comanche for 30 years.
At a recent meeting the Co manche Study Club installed officers for the next two years: President Mrs Ira Clemons first vice president Mrs Gail Dudley second vice president Mrs John Pogue secretary Mrs Virgil Chaffin treasurer Mrs Charles Marshall parliamentarian Mrs C C Klingman. The year closed with a picnic for members and guests at Lake Eanes on Thursday night May 9.
Opening games of the newly organized C Softball League are at 7 30 PM Monday at a Comanche football field. Admission is free. Frank Vineyard faces John Carpenter nine, Allen Beck Oscar Hill meet in the nightcap. Double headers run Mondays and Fridays with 7 inning games. Over 100 players signed. those unsigned may be added.
The Comanche Chief invites parents to have their babies photographed at the McKinzie Hotel on May 22 23 free of charge. Photos will be published later in The Chief with no cost for the cut or publication. No subscription or purchase required. Children of all ages welcomed with a parent present.
Mrs. W H Carpenter of Austin married Roscoe Owen an Eastland attorney at her sister’s Coleman home on Saturday April 27 They will reside in Eastland where Owen runs a broad law practice Both are longtime figures in Comanche and Miss Venner Hooker now Mrs Owen attended Comanche High School and taught locally while Owen a 1908 graduate leads Eastland civic and church work as president of the First Baptist Church deacons board
Pastor C Klingman preaches on Mother's Day May 12 exploring the question Jesus asked, Who Is My Mother, at Central Christian Church. The sermon centers on family and spiritual kinship in a Sunday service.
Comanche High School will hold baccalaureate services in the auditorium Sunday night with a sermon by J. W. Whitefield of the First Methodist Church. Graduation Friday night May 17 will award diplomas to 56 seniors and feature an address by Dr. Homer P. Rainey, former UT president.
The First Baptist Church announces a Mother's Day service at 11 AM with honors for the oldest and youngest mothers. The pastor will preach on Honor Thy Mother. A high school baccalaureate will be held Sunday night with participation in a community service led by Rev Whitefield. The Lambrides plan to attend the Southern Baptist Convention in Miami next week. Attendance at Sunday School last week was 376 with 171 adults. showers reduced younger children present. Daily Vacation Bible School runs May 20 to 31 featuring handwork biblical instruction and character building, ending with a commencement May 31.
Nancy Cunningham daughter of Mr and Mrs Herbert Cunningham underwent an operation at the local hospital this week for appendicitis.
Miss Bess Rambo of Comanche announces her candidacy for District Clerk of Comanche County. She outlines her farm upbringing near Gustine, care for parents, war work in Brownwood, and later roles at local companies, pledging honesty and strong dedication if elected.
Pfc. Billy D. Ford, son of Mr. and Mrs. I. S. Ford of Gustine, will arrive home next Tuesday on furlough from Fort Lewis Washington. He returned from Germany in February 1945 and expects to receive his discharge soon.
Here From California Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Thompson and two children of Blythe California visited relatives here last week. Mrs. Thompson is the former Miss Nane Pate daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Pate now residing in California.
Comanche High School English teacher Mrs. John Dyer is praised for efficient work as sponsor of the Warrior school paper and the Senior edition of The Chief. The note credits her co operation and competence with helping CHS earn statewide distinction.
