Five Voting Places Set for May 18 Constitutional Election

Comanche County Commissioners order only five voting sites on May 18 for the statewide constitutional amendment election. Locations: Comanche De Leon Gustine Sidney and Procter. Amendments include establishing a State Ethics Commission, allowing legislative amendments, lifting certain appropriations limits, and authorizing a 109 million water quality program with a 6 percent interest ceiling.

Absentee Voting Underway in May Texas Amendment Election

County Clerk Betty Conway reports absentee voting on four proposed amendments began April 28 and runs through May 14. No absentee ballots had been cast by Wednesday afternoon.

National peanut support level for 1971 set at 267 per ton

The U S Department of Agriculture announced a minimum national average price of 267 dollars per ton for the 1971 peanut crop, representing 75 percent of February 1971 parity. The 1970 level was 255 dollars. Loans and purchases will support growers, with eligibility tied to 1971 peanut acreage allotment.

Fire Destroys House On Meyers Farm

A small residence on the W. A. Meyers dairy farm seven miles northwest of Comanche was destroyed by fire Sunday morning. The cause is unknown. Occupants Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Gutierrez were away at the time. The farm lies just north of Round Mountain on a county road.

May Day Brings Fatal Crash and Multiple Accidents in Comanche County

May Day weekend in Comanche County saw a fatal two car crash at the Energy intersection injuring Mae Pettit and claiming the life of Lesley C. Hensley, plus several nonfatal incidents including a failing pickup accident and a two car collision near Comanche. The sequence began near Comanche city limits and extended to De Leon area with multiple injuries and property damage.

CHS Maidens Sweep Relays In Regional Track Meet

CHS Maidens win all three relays at the regional 6A track meet in Anson finishing second overall with 68 points behind Flatland. Janet Brightman injured but competed in 440 and 880 relays with Cyndra Frick stepping in. team members Rhonda Lubke Sara Croft Laura Spruill and Fredda Davis secure top finishes. The six girls advance to the State Meet in Abilene on May 14-15 with hopes of a state title.

Walker Wins Accredited Service Award Trip to Dayton

J. D Walker, Frigidaire dealer for Comanche County, earned an Accredited Service Award as one of eight Texas dealers. He has 32 years in service and will fly from Abilene on Sunday May 16 to Dayton, Ohio for a three day all expense paid factory visit, returning May 19.
