County Agent N E Scudder reports potato producers in Comanche County will vote on a marketing quota for the 1938 crop under the Agricultural Adjustment Act. Two meetings set May 7 at Comanche and De Leon at 2 00 pm to discuss the plan, with voting at De Leon May 9 and Comanche May 14.

Comanche County raised 187850 for Liberty Loan, surpassing the 172350 quota. Stores in Comanche plan to close at 6 30 p m starting Monday May 9 except on Saturday and First Monday. Gilmore Durham and H M Vineyard presented a petition for the schedule with several local groceries named including Durham Bros I M Vineyard Sons A and P Tea Co Carnes Food Market City Grocery Leo Shankle City Bakery Baxter s Place C F Williams Grocery Bernard Riley E H Jones Son M Coleman and Ruby and Jane Grocery.
The baccalaureate address for Newburg High School seniors will be May 8 at South Leon Baptist Church delivered by Rev. McGinnis. Commencement is set for May 11 with H. E. Robinson giving the address. The end-of-year program occurs May 13 at 10 a.m. in the Newbury high school auditorium. a Comanche stew lunch with pies and cakes will follow, and ball games are planned.
Wilson, one of Comanche County’s oldest schools, will operate with only two teachers next year. Currently three teachers serve, but a state aid rule drops the scholastic count below the three teacher standard. Retained this year are Miss Katie Lee Jones and Mrs Leona Martin, while Dale Bramilette departs.
The annual Shiloh Cemetery working day is set for Tuesday May 10. The committee urges all interested to come early and bring tools and dinner.
A Texas Real Estate Forum note argues government operating costs have surged 670 percent in twenty years while population grew 38 percent and property values 43 percent. It compares Texas with Indiana Iowa Nebraska and Kansas, suggesting Texas would need huge tax cuts to match the lean costs of those states.
More than twenty business men of Comanche met at Anthony's Lake for a 6:30 breakfast to discuss financing Boy Scout work. J. R. Eanes outlined the Comanche Trail Area setup. four sectional committees were named with local leaders. County Clerk Hollis Burton was named to test the courthouse funds.
On Thursday April 28 the Newburg 4-H Club held a 2:00 pm meeting with all 26 members present. County Agent N E Scudder instructed on demonstration plans and project prospects. That night a program featured a one act play Winning Father and papers on 4-H goals read before parents and friends.
SAM LEWIS announces his bid for a second term as Commissioner of Precinct No 2. He cites road building and prudent budgeting during his first term and asks citizens for their vote and support.
The Davis Quartet will perform Sunday morning May 8 at Gustine Methodist Church. The program features songs for Mother's Day and all are invited to attend at 10 o clock to hear the group.
After about an hour of deliberation a jury found G. W. Chancellor not guilty of murder in the death of his brother in law R. L. Daniels in East Comanche. The defense cited self defense and highlighted Daniels alleged threats and violence toward Chancellor's sister prior to the shooting.
Van S. Clayton, 66, a longtime Comanche County rancher, died Sunday afternoon of a heart attack. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the local Methodist Church with Rev. H. J. Sanders officiating. Born October 21, 1871 in De Kalb County Alabama, he moved to Texas 45 years ago, settling in Harmony in 1892. He married Lester P. Killian in 1900. they had two children, Tom Lacy and Robert Clayton, now in Birmingham, Alabama. two grandchildren. a brother D. F. Clayton of Comanche. and three sisters Emma Arthur of Marshall, Bell White and Mary Killian of Pottersville, Alabama. He joined the Harmony Methodist Church in 1892 and remained a member for nearly 46 years.
The committee urges all interested to attend a cemetery work day at Board Church next Tuesday. Participants should arrive early for a full day's work and bring food to contribute to a Comanche stew.
