Comanche High School prepares a large next issue of The Chief for senior coverage. About 55 graduates will have portraits, with an editor-in-chief and staff chosen from the senior class. Extra copies will boost weekly distribution to 4500, making it one of the paper’s largest editions outside special issues. Advertisers and news items are urged to submit promptly.
A 1942 Chevrolet Coupe owned by Troy Marshall was stolen Sunday night in Comanche front of the First Methodist Church and recovered an hour later by Brown County officers in Brownwood. A soldier, the car’s sole occupant, led officers on a chase and was jailed then turned over to military authorities to face trial.
Mayor W. C. House announces Clean-Up Week in Comanche extended through Saturday May 13 due to rain. City officials report strong public response as the city hauls trash free from containers along street curbs. City Councilman Joe Tupin chairs the committee.
A. P. Cox announces a regular American Legion Post meeting at the county courthouse at 8 30 tonight requesting full attendance.
Comanche County four banks report a collective 4 245 257 74 in deposits on March 31 up from 4 168 319 21 on January 1, with deposits now over twice their pre Pearl Harbor level. Combined totals for Comanche National and State National reach 2 560 324 89, while First State Bank of Gustine, Farmers & Merchants Bank of De Leon show 225 944 74 and 1 459 088 11 respectively.
County Chairman R L Lane announces two precinct conventions in Comanche County to elect delegates for the county meeting in the County Courtroom Saturday at 2 PM. Each voting box gains one delegate per 25 votes from the July 1942 primary. temporary chairmen may be chosen if incumbents are absent.
Lt Ted Durhamson of Co man che writes from England on 18 months in a Station Hospital praising Red Cross work at home. He notes home made masks gowns operating drapes and sponges arrive with labels from towns in New York Pennsylvania Alabama Ohio and urges Comanche ladies to keep producing. He mentions sewing machines and two English ladies aiding linen supply for repairs and patches.
Sol Hoffman Comanche County official dealer shipped another car of scrap paper this week. The count reaches fifty cars of scrap material shipped by Hoffman, marking the half hundred milestone for the effort.
Several good bass limits logged opening week of the season. County Agent Calvin Holcomb reported five keeper bass, Frank Ray four bass, and C B Baxter three bass totaling eleven pounds. An out of town angler landed a 12 pound catfish while Earl Davis of Comanche hauled a 62 pound black bass early Wednesday.
County Red Cross Chairman Roy Brannan asks Comanche business houses to display flags the first four days of next week to honor the Red Cross Mobile Blood Unit coming here. Mayor W C House proclaims the display and suggests homes also show flags in yards. Miss Jennie Lou Dewitt will remind business men Monday to put out flags.
The Civil Service Commission announces an examination to fill a rural carrier vacancy at Comanche. Applications close May 19 and forms are available at the Comanche Post Office. Appointments from this exam will generally last for the war and no more than six months afterward per E. W. Sullivan assistant postmaster.
Comanche will host a four day Red Cross Blood Donor Service drive at the First Baptist Church with Mills County De Leon and Blanket Days. About 250 donors from Mills County and De Leon are expected, with Comanche residents participating on Blanket Day and city volunteers donating Thursday.
Judy Williams daughter of Mr and Mrs Preston Williams will serve as Humor Editor for the CHS Senior Edition of The Comanche Chief. As CHS Smile girl she is poised to contribute engaging items in next week’s issue.
The Proctor High School senior class will stage their annual comedy drama The Red-Headed Stepchild on Friday night May 12. Cast includes Mary Joyce Buckler Geneive Faulkner H G Bagg Jr La Rue Holland Kenneth Decker Billie Lee Stephens Edith Salyer Joe Moring Minnie Lee Foley Edith Joe Northcutt Dorothy Joyee and Juanita Smith.
A small tornado struck Duster School Monday at 3 30 pm causing notable damage to the new building completed a year ago Two brick flues were blown off and damage was about 400 dollars No injuries occurred while students practiced a play below the impact area. Paul Brewer reported seeing a funnel cloud strike the structure.
