Saturday Deadline For Auto Tags In Comanche County 1944

Comanche County residents must buy automobile and truck license tags to use vehicles on highways after April 2 1944. Licenses may be purchased after the date with a penalty for driving on the highways without new tags. New licenses are small tabs to be affixed to the 1942 large plates.

Red Cross Meeting at Courthouse Next Tuesday

The Comanche County Red Cross will hold a meeting in the county courthouse court room next Tuesday at 3 30 pm. Roy Brannan, County Chairman, says the election of officers will take place and any donor of one dollar or more to the Red Cross during the year may vote. The county has a strong Red Cross record in recent years.

Easter Sunday April 9 designated as Buckner Orphans Home Egg Day by Comanche County Baptist Association. Farms urged to donate a day's egg production to stock the Home. Call John Norrid Produce Co. for empty cases and deliver eggs to De Leon Gustine or Comanche for pickup by Johnson trucks.

Food Stamps No Longer Expire In War Ration Book Four

Starting Sunday March 26 expiration dates were removed from all Red and Blue food stamps in War Ration Book Four. Expiration dates for other food stamps had already been removed.

Comanche County 4-H Reports 19 Clubs and 315 Members in 1944

The 1944 Comanche County 4-H year shows 19 clubs with 315 active members, with seven new clubs organized in March. County agents guided food production for about one thousand schoolchildren while members sold livestock and eggs and earned bonds and metal, with several awards and a planned encampment canceled due to illness.

City Streets Improve Under Local Program

A street improvement program is under way as 46 blocks receive quality material for weatherproof streets. The project has cost $2385.85 from the Street Fund with about 30 more blocks planned and a carload of Uvalde premix material arrived to repair paved streets and the public square.

Sunrise Easter Service At Comanche High School

Comanche High School to hold Easter Sunrise Service at 7:45 a.m. on Sunday on the south side of the campus weather permitting. Carl Brumbelow leads the high school a capella choir with help from the Grammar School choir under Miss Marguerite Ross. The service will be broadcast via KBWD Brownwood.

Plays At Sidney Tuesday Night

Sidney Speech Class will present two plays Tuesday night April 4 in the school auditorium at 8 30. Supt J B Cooper says the program includes a three act comedy No Men Ad mitted and a one act comedy Winnin Dat Gal. Admission is five cents for Grammar School students and ten cents for all others. Welcome all come and enjoy an evening of fun and relax from all worries.

Comanche Sailor Hubert Eoff Returns From Pacific Service

Helps Sink Sub Flc Hubert Eoff son of Mrs C H Eoff Comanche recently returned to the West Coast from the Southwest Pacific where he served with the U S Fleet against the Japs in the Marshall Islands and New Hebrides sectors The Comanche sailor writes he will be home only briefly and hopes for a Christmas leave He describes taking part in operations including sinking a Japanese submarine and notes his height and weight as 6 foot 4 and 225 pounds.

Claude George Enters Veterans Hospital in Dallas

Claude George, longtime foreman of The Comanche Chief, left Tuesday for the Veterans Hospital in Dallas for treatment after a period of illness since September. He served in World War I and has been with The Chief since 1911, known as a skilled printer and machinist dedicated to the paper and its reputation.

Crop Goals Set For Comanche County Farmers

Comanche County farmers plan to meet high crop production targets to support the Food For Victory drive. Major goals include 80,000 acres peanuts and 80,000 acres feed crops, plus 7,100 cotton and 5,000 wheat. Also planned are 8,400 dairy cows, 262,000 hens, 3,103 sows, and tens of thousands of poultry and cattle.

General George C. Kenney commends Lt. Jack M. Brightman of the Southwest Pacific Air Forces for heroism and 50 plus missions between July 17 and November 21, 1943. Decorated for courage in combat and extraordinary achievement while dropping supplies and transporting troops near Japanese bases.

Local Schools Return to Regular Start Time Monday

Comanche Public Schools revert to regular hours starting Monday under Superintendent W Z Compton. Classes begin at 9 00 a m instead of 9 30 and noon dismissal moves to 12 00 from 12 30 for the foreseeable schedule.
