A trustee election is scheduled tomorrow in Comanche County with all wool districts voting for County Trustees. Precinct No. 1 Walter Pitts seeks re election unopposed while Precinct No. 3 H Shockley runs for re election. Comanche Independent School District shows no contest for the first time in years.
Ernest Tupin will open a jewelry store and repair shop in the McNutt Barber Shop building this Saturday sharing space with Mr. McNutt. He recently completed a jewelry course and has operated a repair shop at the Service Drug Store since November. He plans a full line of jewelry and will add silverware.
Aunt Jane Wilson aged 103 was honored by friends and church members at a home between Sidney and Blan. Rev H J Anders led special services as the county’s oldest resident, born May 26 1836 shortly after Texas independence.
Co. P Harris of Lamkin was killed instantly Friday afternoon when his car collided with an automobile driven by Leon Smith on Highway 40 near Vandalia Illinois. Six others were injured in the serious collision.
Twenty years ago the Tippett well shows at 2700 feet with slow drilling through gray lime rock. black lime found at 2561 feet. Local unrest rises after the Duke discovery. Soldiers discharged receive a $60 bonus. others urged to apply. Comanche politics favor incumbents Lacy Anote and Mayor Eanes. Alice Alsup named mission teacher in Kansas City. Hood County road work contract awarded. Burks-Firming Hart engineers contractor. Derroll Nabers, Sebe Payne, and W. Carroll attend the I.C.C.F. Dallas lodge. Fred Brightman returns post discharge. he was injured in France.
The twice postponed County Class A and Class B meet begins today at 9 AM at the local ball park. Wet grounds delayed the Saturday start from March 25 and heavy rain forced delays. Coach Bull Fletcher of Comanche expects the meet rain or shine with preliminaries in high and low hurdles and finals at 1 PM.
Lamkin secures easy overall victory in the Comanche County Interscholastic League Class C race. Nearly three times Van Dyke's points, Lamkin leads totals across volley ball and literary events with strong showings in All Around and High School Literary totals. Van Dyke, Downing, Oliver Springs, Pettit, Trinity, and Wilson trail with varying scores in total, all around, and school literary totals.
Comanche City Schools won first place in all singing events at the County Meet in Class A. High School Girls Glee Club, High School Boys Glee Club, Grammar School Choral Club, and Ward School singing all took top honors. This marked the third straight year of a full sweep by Comanche singers.
Pettit High School captured the Class C track title by edging Lamkin 57 to 56 in a close meet. Pettit won eleven first places while Lamkin swept many second and third places. the Pettit team was coached by George Willis.
C R Nichols has been named agent for the Santa Fe in Comanche and will assume duties soon. He previously served as agent at Copperas Cove for many years and is described as an excellent businessman and a fine gentleman.
Mr Horton and his son Leo, helped by Roy Jones and Tom Lester and his brother, killed a mad dog on the W. B. Horton farm in Cross Roads. Ownership of the dog is not known.
Two cotton stalks grown side by side were dusted with sulphur and calcium arsenate in Comanche at Higginbotham's show window. The poisoned stalks produced no bolls while the untreated stalk had seven. the display was explained to Comanche Lions Club guests Ms Carter and H L Kight with Co mande cotton farmers representatives present.
A. C. Hagen of the Texas Rural Electrification Administration reports five crews to start staking two more sections on April 3. Sixty miles staked so far at 482.28 per mile, below the contractor bid of 551. The program offers loans up to 80 percent for wiring and appliances, with meetings scheduled in Van Dyke, Sidney, Downing and Beattie. The R.E.A. office has moved to the New Higginbotham Building.
Tomorrow and today are the final days to purchase 1939 automobile and truck licenses without penalty per County Tax Collector P A Pettit. On April 2 a 20 percent penalty will apply to unregistered cars. Pettit notes heavy sales and a big rush expected this weekend.
Universal Mills cowboys from Fort Worth will bring guitars violins and other instruments to Brightman and Son Feed Store in Comanche Monday afternoon April 3. Programs start at 3 30 and 5 30 p m directed by Charlie Willhoite. They will play request numbers and are known for radio appearances heard daily except Sunday at 12 45 p m over KGKO.
De Leon holds a clear lead in the County Interscholastic League Meet with Comanche runner up as track and field, playground ball, tennis and literary events tally points. Current totals list De Leon 218, Comanche 172, Comyn 162, with other schools Gus tine 68142, Sidney 103, and Gustine figures noted in various categories.
Comanche hosts three recurring trade days with the usual Saturday crowd expected rain or shine. Monday marks the regular monthly trades day, a tradition over 50 years old. Tuesday features the bi monthly live stock auction sale drawing growing crowds on the first and third Tuesday.
Mrs George S Clark is receiving treatment in a Marlin hospital as reported in local notices. The brief item notes her ongoing medical care and location without further details.
The Comanche High School Dramatic Club won the One-Act Play contest of the Comanche County Interscholastic League in the local auditorium Saturday night. Comanche will represent the county in the District Meet at Brownwood April 14. The play The Lost Voice was coached by Miss Blanche Dabney. James Martin was voted best actor and Florence Dutton of Sidney was named best actress.
Lamkin High School wins the Comanche County boys debate championship by defeating De Leon in the finals. Lamkin had previously won Class C, while De Leon claimed Class A. De Leon girls beat Lamkin for the county title. Both Lamkin boys and De Leon girls advance to the District Meet in Brownwood.
Rev Lem R Carter son of Rev T N Carter of Comanche has been appointed field secretary of the Baptist Church of Utah Idaho and Montana with headquarters in Salt Lake City. He will move from Idaho to Salt Lake City around June 1.
Romeo S. Walker of Austin visited the area this week, stopping for meetings and briefings with local officials and residents. The visit highlighted ongoing regional projects and community concerns.
Fifteen candidates to be voted on in Comanche city election next Tuesday. Beattie holds a ten point lead on Proctor for Class B honors as tallying continues in ball and literary events. Voters will choose a mayor three aldermen a city secretary a city marshal and a city attorney with all but mayor and attorney contests. Sample ballot lists candidates for each post.
Coleman urges Comanche citizens to support his noncompetitive Mayoral run and outlines plans to lower taxes and water rates, fix the sewer plant, create a marketplace for farmers, meter all water users, extend mains, pave streets, improve unpaved avenues, add parking, and expand farm products markets while maintaining WPA projects. He asks for votes on April 4, 1939.
S C Findley of Brownwood elected Head Council at the State convention in San Antonio. A Woodmen veteran of nearly 40 years, he has served as a national representative. W C Cauley of Comanche attended the convention and returned with Herbert Butler formerly of Comanche now in Nocona as a camp representative.
There will be a working at Zion Hill Cemetery on Wednesday April 5. All who are interested should attend as weeds are small and it will be easy to clean. Committee invites participation.
Three 4-H Club boys and one girl displayed calf breeding skills under County Agent supervision. Jack Lane Newburg earned a $91.47 profit on a calf sold for 133.00 after expenses. Gene Seay Pettit profited 27.74 from a 104.49 sale. Dean Smith Blanket netted 43.23 after costs. Nora Joe Willifore Newburg made 18 to 20 profit. County hopes for more youth involvement next spring.
A cemetery working is set for Siloam Saturday April 1 led by C. R. Peterson. Workers are asked to come early and bring tools so the project may be completed by noon if possible.
