Downing well strikes second oil sand at 800 feet

Drilling at the Downing oil well continues with strong oil showings as a new oil sand layer is struck at about 800 feet. Geologists expect a productive zone below 1000 feet and anticipate another sand layer within the next hundred feet. Leases remain unchanged as investors wait on the outcome.

The Comanche High School auditorium gains a new curtain and scenery funded by the 1918 senior class. They hired a scenery painter and sold ads on the curtain to almost cover the cost. The gift, valued by the school, honors future students and showcases the seniors’ pluck.

Former Comanche Man Killed in Auto Wreck

Lee Brady formerly of Comanche and late of Bonham was killed Tuesday in an automobile crash near Bonham. The vehicle skidded while turning a corner with fatal results. Brady lived here several years ago and worked in local barber shops.

Local Baptists Call Pastor Rev W Holland

The Local Baptist Church extended a call to Rev. W Holland to become pastor and he accepted. He led a revival last three weeks ending with 109 professions and 30 reclamations, and has eight months with Baptist Seminary as an evangelist after serving Clay Street Baptist Church in Waco. The congregation welcomes Rev. Holland to Comanche.

Food conservation speaker draws large Comanche crowds

Mrs. Fine from the food conservation service spoke four times in Comanche this week. She addressed high school pupils and parents, town women, a Baptist tabernacle crowd, and business men at the courthouse, delivering strong calls for conserving food supplies.

Lightning Strikes Home Destroying Residence in Storm

The residence of Arther Hill was struck by lightning at about 4 oclock Thursday morning. The house burned to the ground but neighbors saved most of the household goods as residents were away for the night. Communications failures hindered alerting firefighters, and the property owned by Mrs. G. H. Goodson was across the street from the Hoff home.

County Track Meet to Be Held Saturday

The Comanche County Inter scholastic League will hold its annual meet on Saturday at Comanche High School. The program lists events in debating and declamation, spelling, and track work. A dinner will be spread on the high school grounds and an old fashioned picnic will be held.

Red Cross Sewing Class Planned at Dublin High School

Mrs. Kite of Dublin leads an instructional class this week on making surgical dressings at the high school building. Regular sessions follow on Mondays and Wednesdays after school hours. Materials including yarn have arrived. volunteers are urged to join and collect supplies.
