On Tuesday organizers of the Thrift stamp campaign visited Proctor Beattie Lamkin and Fleming to promote Liberty Bonds and Thrift stamps. Committees led by Holloway Harris Waring Goodson Milton Adams Smith Eanes Carpenter Palmer and Anthony visited each town where crowds showed strong interest in both Thrift Stamps and Liberty Bonds.
Federal Farm Loan Bank Houston reports total loans of 6.1 million dollars granted to date. Listed by locale, Comanche 36167 Brownwood 16510 Banks 28820 Dublin 22875 Coldthwaite 22646 Indian Creek Brown County 16180 Star Mills County 19970 Stephenville 14780 Zephyr 11220.
The Majestic Theatre in Comanche advertises a photo session showing people as they appear on the streets over the first three days next week. A baby show with a grand prize runs simultaneously, inviting all children under five to enter at the Majestic ticket office windows.
Four aldermen were chosen in a calm city election held last Tuesday with 156 votes cast. Winners include F. F. Jacobs 119 votes and J. W. McCollum 117. others were J. A. Montgomery 103, C. L. Cox 77, N. A. Palmer 71, J. T. Moody 58, and J. Grisham 56.
The local board asks friends and relatives to locate several men in class one who have not been examined. Time for holding them is nearly up and they may be classified as deserters if not found. Names listed include C. McKinney E L Mullins Gus C Lewis Jno Kellum J F Johnson Joe Runkle L W Boynton R E Harry and others.
Last Monday night guests at Ridgeway Hotel woke to missing clothing from their rooms. In the morning their trousers were found missing with evidence of a careful entry and theft of cash while watches and other valuables were left behind. No clue to the criminals. Two guests faced only minor losses.
J Q Johnson of near Comanche died Monday at his home near the old Montgomery schoolhouse after a brief illness. Born May 31, 1878 in Marion County Tennessee he married Dorothy Beaty on April 28 1901 and they had eight children seven of whom survived. A Baptist and longtime community member he was buried Tuesday at Newbury with ministers Milton and Brisco officiating.
Comanche merchants observe the Food Administration request with windows showing food conservation. The Cash Store window is noted as a large splendid display and one of the best dressed windows in Comanche.
The Third Liberty Loan campaign begins with Liberty Bond Day on Saturday in Comanche. A rally at the Baptist Tabernacle at 2 p.m. will feature band music, prayers, speeches on Liberty Bond necessity and our part, and the taking of subscriptions. Businesses close 2 p.m. and reopen after 6 p.m. to allow attendance.
The Liberty Bond campaign's County Executive Committee met at the courthouse Wednesday at 2 p m. to plan measures for advancing bond sales. Representatives from De Leon Proctor Newbury Fleming Sipe Springs Gustine Downing Sidney Whitville were present. after discussion it was decided every committee would appoint salesmen and begin the campaign at once.
A candidacy notice from Mrs Jennie Garrett announces her bid for County Clerk in Comanche County. She notes 28 years in the area and 15 years of local business experience, pledging impartial and capable service if elected.
New operating instructions require the Cotton Belt and Frisco depots to close their freight offices at 4 30 p m each day, standardizing hours across both facilities.
A wartime store advertises lower prices on potatoes urging customers to buy more for duty. The notice emphasizes affordable produce at the Farmers' Store with a patriotic call to stock up.
Cecil Cox son of Mr and Mrs Jim Cox of Comanche died after a brief illness. He had been in Stephenville employed by Higginbotham firm and returned home with pleurisy before passing away. A popular young man, he was laid to rest Wednesday at 4 pm with Rev Austin officiating.
All Comanche merchants have signed an agreement to close their stores at 6:30 in the afternoon, observing government time. This change allows employees to be released an hour earlier than usual.
Comanche County’s Liberty Bond quota for the third issue is 172 390 dollars, higher than the previous bond’s 165 000 dollar cap. By the last issue the county raised about 80 000 dollars of the quota.
The annual interscholastic meet at the high school drew record entries and larger attendance. Winners emerged in declamation spelling basketball and debate across rural city and independent schools with notable performances by Elm Grove Gustine and De Leon students. Proctor Brooks Comanche and Gustine teams reached finals and De Leon won the debate and boys basketball titles.
