Hearing on Santa Fe plan to discontinue two day trains

The Texas Railroad Commission announced hearings on the Gulf Colorado and Santa Fe Railways bid to discontinue passenger trains 73 and 74 between Fort Worth and Brownwood. The March 28 Comanche County hearing at 2 p.m. follows earlier hearings in Stephenville and Dublin with reasons cited by the commission.

Lawless Named Manager of Comanche Butane Company

Welch Lawless a World War II veteran and former Higginbotham and Camp Bowie worker is appointed manager of the Comanche Butane Company, succeeding Charles Carter who will enter another business. Lawless, reared in Comanche County, is praised as an outstanding young man. Carter, serving a second term as district clerk, has other plans to announce.

H L Stewart Sells Abstract Firm After 30 Years Here

H L Stewart sold his Home Abstract and Title Co to John and Dorothy Robertson of Comanche County Abstract. the business, started in 1916 as Wilson Abstract by George Cunningham and Hilton Burks, traces origins to Bonner and Holeman. Stewart, a former county judge, also taught at Comanche and Sipe Springs before entering commerce.

Gail Dudley Elected Texas Hereford Association Director

Gail Dudley, Comanche rancher, was elected a director of the Texas Hereford Association at a Fort Worth meeting and named to the executive board. Other board members include Roy Largent, Harry Arledge, Ernest Grissom, Mans Hoggett, J. M. North Jr., B. F. Phillips, Pryor Lucas, George Nance, and Charles Pettit. Dudley Bros. Ranch near Comanche ships about 200 head of registered Herefords and 600 head of commercial cattle.

Glaze and Phillips opened a garage at 303 West Grand in the F. F. Clark Garage Building in Comanche. W. C. Glaze, a former Odessa mechanic, and L. B. Phillips, a returning service man from Comanche, own the new business and will handle all kinds of auto repair work. They invite public patronage.

T. C. Stephens 89 Dies. Lamkin Elder and Longtime Resident

Lamkin's eldest citizen T. C. Stephens, 89, died at home Saturday. Funeral services were held Sunday at Gentry's Mill Cemetery with a Church of Christ minister officiating. He was married in 1880 to Dick Alma Lewis. their sixty sixth anniversary was recent. Survived by widow, five sons Frank, Pharis, Thea, Marvin, Willie. 21 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Gustine Sunshine Club Honors World War II Hero Huey

The Gustine Sunshine Club in Comanche County launches a fund honoring Sergeant Granvel Huey now in Godley. Club president Myrtle McDonald reports a $52.50 start and a $5 donation from A L Morgan of Cleburne. Huey, wounded in the Battle of the Ardennes, lost speech and partial use of his leg but remains devoted to the Army and plans to open a picture show in his father’s red brick building in Godley once funded.

Regional water project group formed at De Leon meeting

Delegations from Hamilton Dublin Gustine Ranger Fastland De Leon and Comanche formed a regional body to study Leon River data for flood control and municipal water supply for Ranger De Leon Dublin Hamilton and Comanche. Fred Brown of Eastland elected chairman with one representative from each town on the executive committee. The group urged funding of 11 800 000 for dam construction near Be and advocated breaking the amount into a program of studies to support the stated goals.

J R Eanes of Comanche was named president of a five county organization formed last week to sponsor flood control and reservoir creation for municipal water on the Elm River between Gatesville and Eastland. The counties are Eastland Erath Comanche Hamilton and Coryell.
