Voters in Justice Precinct No. 4 will cast ballots Saturday March 20 on legalizing all alcoholic beverages for off premise consumption only. Proctor Voting Box No. 13 serves the precinct with about 250 registered voters. legal challenges and court guidance loom amid a long contested history of liquor laws and prior elections.
Payne Roy a noted Graham lawyer was retained by a group of Comanche County Drys for the March 20 local option election in Justice Precinct No 4. Roy promised a fair inquiry into election practices, pledging action against illegal voting or tampering after meetings with Texas Rangers and other authorities.
A March 29 hearing in 52nd District Court will decide if a long standing temporary injunction against Comanche Independent School District and its boards becomes permanent. The suit, Levisay Cunningham Ferrill et al v Comanche ISD, arose from claims the district’s tax proposal used unfair appraisal.
A gospel meeting will run at the Church of Christ on 605 N Austin St from March 22 for several days. Evangelist Vernon Ripley, formerly of Comanche and now in Lewisville, will lead the services nightly at 7 30 pm with two Sunday sermons at 10 45 am and 7 pm. W R Hooton conducts the congregational singing. All are welcome.
Mr and Mrs William H Crow missionaries on furlough from Liberia West Africa will speak at First United Methodist Church in Comanche on Sunday evening April 1.
The Women’s Society of Christian Service sponsors a covered dish supper in the church fellowship hall at 7:00 p.m. followed by a talk by the Crows. The church provides drinks and bread. all are welcome per Rev. Frank L. Turner Jr. The invitation extends to Hamilton Dublin and Stephenville United Methodist Churches.
After a public hearing on March 11 in Proctor, more than 50 voter challenges in Comanche County's Box 13 were dismissed and their registrations left intact. Two challenges were sustained, three were withdrawn, and one was refused. The hearing clarified that the registrar's role is to issue or cancel registrations, while legality of residency claims can be appealed within 30 days.
Comanche County faces widespread grass and pasture fires with hundreds of acres already burned. Fire Marshal Dale Nowlin reports more than two dozen calls in ten days and warns that damage extends beyond rural areas into towns. He urges strict precautions to prevent further blazes.
Floyd Prather, manager of Occidental Chemical, was robbed at the Tidelands Motel in Houston on March 11. A Black intruder posing as room service knocked, fought him, fired a shot that lodged in the wall, then escaped after taking a $35 watch and cash and disabling the room’s telephone lines.
Five members were named to the preliminary board of governors for the new Comanche Community Hospital. The final board will expand to 25 business and civic leaders. Don Lacy Ben Sudderth Joe Waring Ben Wilhelm and Dr Bill Carpenter comprise the initial slate.
The Brownwood Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual banquet on Thursday night March 25 with Dr. Guy D Newman as speaker. Newman, a native Texan, is nearing 17 years as president of Howard Payne College and has held multiple national and state appointments in education and youth policy. He led the Democracy in Action program award at Valley Forge and was named to the Wisdom Hall of Fame.
Maiden high school track coach Leia Andrews leads the girls team to Burleson for a junior high and high school meet. The squad, known for strong performances, aims to show its depth in relays and field events with multiple runners named for junior high and high school events and several A team members listed for specific races.
Texas Ranger George Rogch opened an investigation after Comanche County sheriff's deputies learned 75 year old cattle dealer was bilked of 3846 by two men a white and colored who posed as cow sellers. Tom Bagley of Comanche reported paying cash for 34 cows in pasture near Comanche and left money in a handkerchief before the men disappeared with no cash returned and the cows possibly remaining in pasture.
Comanche County is listed by the Agriculture Department in Washington as under federal quarantine for hog cholera. Twenty seven of the 29 counties are in a belt southwest of Fort Worth. others under complete or partial quarantine include Bosque Callahan Eastland Erath Freestone McLennan Hill Somervell Tarrant Comanche Bell Brown Coleman Coryell Limestone Mills Navarro El Paso Bexar. Direct pig movement restrictions apply from quarantined areas.
The Evening Lions Club meets Tuesday evening March 25 at 6 30 in the Golden Arrow Cafeteria. Daniel Marantha a ministerial student from Indonesia attending Howard Payne College will address the club.
The Proctor Reservoir Weather Station releases a 24 hour report covering temperatures and moisture from midnight to 8 a.m. The data reflect early morning conditions at the station.
The U S Department of Agriculture announced a minimum national average peanut support level of 267 per ton for the 1971 crop, about 75 percent of parity. The 1970 level was 255 per ton and loans and purchases will back the price support with compliance to the 1971 acreage allotment.
