Shumpes and Willis Named to CHS Boys State Delegation

Skipper Shumpes and Tommy Willis were announced as CHS delegates to Boys State in Austin in June, sponsored by the American Legion with Lions Club support. Alternate is John Norris, with Gray Jolink as another candidate. The group includes ten juniors with B average or better and features leaders from football, basketball, tennis, student council, and National Honor Society.

Salvation Army Doing Good Job in Comanche

In Comanche the local Salvation Army unit thrives under work unit chairman Herbert Goodson and committee. Local leaders include A Kerby treasurer Elza Brinson vice chair Kath leen Eads camp chairman Bill Dudney Welfare secretary Belve Bean. In 1963 the unit aided 139 families and 26 school children. Jack Sharkey noted the unit’s outstanding work and its role in the Comanche United Fund.

County extension office announces the 1964 Share the Fun Festival on March 14 at 7 30 p m in the Comanche High School Auditorium. Eighteen acts from Comanche County 4 H clubs compete on talent showmanship audience appeal costumes and appropriateness to 4 H standards. Planning committee includes Mrs Gayle McCullough Bill Lane and Bill Parks. Public invited to attend.

Comanche County 4 H Tractor Contest Saturday March 14

Comanche County's 4 H Tractor Contest will be held Saturday afternoon March 14 on the Sartor Bros lot. Junior and Senior divisions determine representatives for the April 11 District 8 eliminations at Tarleton State College. The four part event includes a written exam, practical maintenance test, two wheel and four wheel course with judges Joe Tupin Gayle McCullough Leroy Kemmitz and Ed Sartor. Tractor safety is emphasized throughout. Participants have met weekly at local dealers Allis Chalmers Petsick Ford Sartor Bros and John Deere McDougal Motor Co to support the project.

Sixth Annual Lamb Show Set for Comanche County

The sixth annual Comanche County lamb show will be held this Saturday at the Livestock Showbarn in Comanche with 100 head expected. Classification by Bob Chandler starts at 9 15 a m and more than a dozen FFA and 4 H youth plan a Fort Worth educational Market Study Monday after a noon lamb luncheon at the Junior High Cafetorium.

Layman Loses Court Round in 10-Year Theft Verdict

Comanche County 52nd District Court jurors, after three days of testimony, found Benton Layman guilty of theft of more than 10,000 pounds of oats from Dudley Brothers and sentenced him to 10 years in prison. The case centered on oats allegedly stolen Sept 11 1959 from the former Brysonville School storage. The State presented a Caraway & Sons payment check as evidence while Patterson testified against Layman. Layman denied the charges and plans a new trial motion within the legal window. Patterson, placed in custody, faced his own indictments as Layman was freed on appeal bond.
