The General Telephone Company will connect Comanche and Gustine with Extended Area Service ESA enabling calls without long distance charges. Service begins April 1 with installation completing over about 18 months and rates remaining the same current.
Gustine 4-H members gather Monday night at the school for their annual club meeting. George Tolbert, the local veterinarian, will speak and vaccinate animals as part of the program. Juniors and seniors participate in a community service effort with hopes to win the trophy in a regional competition.
Skipper Shumpes and Tommy Willis were announced as CHS delegates to Boys State in Austin in June, sponsored by the American Legion with Lions Club support. Alternate is John Norris, with Gray Jolink as another candidate. The group includes ten juniors with B average or better and features leaders from football, basketball, tennis, student council, and National Honor Society.
In Comanche the local Salvation Army unit thrives under work unit chairman Herbert Goodson and committee. Local leaders include A Kerby treasurer Elza Brinson vice chair Kath leen Eads camp chairman Bill Dudney Welfare secretary Belve Bean. In 1963 the unit aided 139 families and 26 school children. Jack Sharkey noted the unit’s outstanding work and its role in the Comanche United Fund.
Mrs E Arthur expresses thanks for Heart Month help and advertising efforts in The Comanche Chief. The note highlights the ongoing battle against heart disease, needing training for thousands of researchers and expanded facilities to accelerate medical progress. It credits Jaycees and businessmen for their support during February Heart Month.
County extension office announces the 1964 Share the Fun Festival on March 14 at 7 30 p m in the Comanche High School Auditorium. Eighteen acts from Comanche County 4 H clubs compete on talent showmanship audience appeal costumes and appropriateness to 4 H standards. Planning committee includes Mrs Gayle McCullough Bill Lane and Bill Parks. Public invited to attend.
Comanche County's 4 H Tractor Contest will be held Saturday afternoon March 14 on the Sartor Bros lot. Junior and Senior divisions determine representatives for the April 11 District 8 eliminations at Tarleton State College. The four part event includes a written exam, practical maintenance test, two wheel and four wheel course with judges Joe Tupin Gayle McCullough Leroy Kemmitz and Ed Sartor. Tractor safety is emphasized throughout. Participants have met weekly at local dealers Allis Chalmers Petsick Ford Sartor Bros and John Deere McDougal Motor Co to support the project.
The sixth annual Comanche County lamb show will be held this Saturday at the Livestock Showbarn in Comanche with 100 head expected. Classification by Bob Chandler starts at 9 15 a m and more than a dozen FFA and 4 H youth plan a Fort Worth educational Market Study Monday after a noon lamb luncheon at the Junior High Cafetorium.
Mrs Martin Eads president appeals Comanche County for Easter Seals donations to fund services for crippled children and adults. The notice asks readers to buy a share by mail, stressing hope and money. A weekend visit note mentions Mrs W J Barret and Martha and Lou visiting Andrews.
Comanche County 52nd District Court jurors, after three days of testimony, found Benton Layman guilty of theft of more than 10,000 pounds of oats from Dudley Brothers and sentenced him to 10 years in prison. The case centered on oats allegedly stolen Sept 11 1959 from the former Brysonville School storage. The State presented a Caraway & Sons payment check as evidence while Patterson testified against Layman. Layman denied the charges and plans a new trial motion within the legal window. Patterson, placed in custody, faced his own indictments as Layman was freed on appeal bond.
CHS presents the senior class play Hill Billy Wedding from March 16 to 19 at 7 45 p m with cast including Paw Boleinkle Roger Jones Ma Marehna Wilkerson Janey Lou Lou McCullough Ceelie Kay Furton Bonnie Mae Leslie Hallmark Ronald Maxwell Jerry Foreman Aunt Lucy Kay Rachels and supporting players. Admission 35 and 50 cents with student and adult night options.
Miss Berta Brightman earned a bachelor of science in homemaking from North Texas University in Denton on January 28. Her early interest began at Comanche High School where she held several local offices and completed student teaching at Lewisville High School. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Oswell Brightman of Comanche.
