Rain appears best in years as county farmers plant record grain acreage. Mild weather spurs rapid corn and maize planting while land prep for peanuts and cotton accelerates. Comanche County diversifies with strong outlook, promising quicker prosperity than counties relying on grain and cotton.
Following a meeting of local business men at the request of Mrs. Elizabeth Temple, the group decided to stage a series of egg shows to render assistance to poultry raisers in and near Comanche.
City of Comanche Texas on March 1 1927 reports total indebtedness of 266 405 00 with net debt 221 611 34 after assets and credits. Taxable city value listed at 2 171 233 00. improvements funded from general street and water funds totaling 9 250 00.
President J L Ellis and Secretary G R Pratt announce a meeting of the Farm Bureau Cotton Association membership for Saturday March 12 at 2 30 p m in the district courtroom Comanche. Reports from the State Convention will be received and other vital business matters to interest the membership will be discussed. full attendance is urged.
Citizens of Sipe Springs rally to reopen the school in the vacant Platt-Stamey building. Desks arrive from nearby communities as the Monday session begins with W. F. Roberson as superintendent and W. H. Logan as principal guiding staff Jimmie Wyche Jewell McKeenie Muriel Williams and Iva Burleson.
Miss Myrt Bryson is visiting Fort Worth and will accompany her sister Mrs. H. E. McCullough to Frederick Oklahoma. Mrs. McCullough has been visiting in Comanche and Coleman.
The Co manche High School elimination crowned winners in senior junior and sub junior divisions for boys and girls. Key victors included Lucile Nance for Americas Uncrowned Queen Imogene Ray second and Ena Armstrong third in senior girls while Maurice Hoffman led the junior boys with Liberty or Death and Odessa Edmonson topped the junior girls with The Name of Old Glory. Other entrants listed include T A Barnes J Frank Redwine Bertha Hart Berna Cochran Hattie Faye Todd and Virginia Walker among many.
J B Layne directs county executive committee to hold a meeting March 12 at 3 p m in the Supt H L Gantz office to arrange the Comanche county meet on March 25 and 26. All schools urged to attend and submit last year’s loving cups for display.

W F Hudson of the Democrat s Community reports a Sunday night blaze February 26 destroying a large barn and its contents with no insurance. Harness, thirty loads of corn, 150 bushels of oats maize and roughage, and 90 to 100 goats were burned. The barn burned between 8 and 9 pm, while Hudson was indoors and unaware until near total loss. Origin undetermined as no one had been near the barn recently.
Tates Dry Goods Store announces arrival of the latest hemming and picoting machine as featured elsewhere in the paper.
Mrs. Romeo Walker's class will travel to Brownwood on Friday to present the one act play Dust of the Road. They compete to advance to an Austin meet next month with the winner earning a California trip and a $5,000 prize. Cast includes Wendell Herring as the Tramp George Hulsey as Peter Steele Lucile Nance as Prudence Steele and Tom Pulliam as the old man. The local performance date will be announced soon.
Officials call on all schools to decide which students will participate in the County Meet events and notify the proper authorities. The move aims to ensure a smooth exhibition of work and timely preparation for the showcasing program.
The Lions Club holds a regular meeting next Monday evening at the Ridgeway Hotel. President Eanes requests full attendance as matters of wise interest to the club will be discussed. The previous meeting was postponed due to Mrs. Miller’s illness.
The city reveals expenditures for lake trees forced a $4200 loan from Bank and left the city short of funds. The water system now operates on a better paying basis, and a definite income and expense statement will be provided soon under new rates. Mayor J. R. Eanes signs off.
