Prison break foiled at county jail by sheriff's wife hearing noise

Late Friday night a planned escape was halted when Mrs. Gilbreath heard sawing above the jail floor. Sheriff Gilbreath found Sam Augustine sawing window bars while Beaumont King had earlier been removed from his cell. Hack saw blades and duplicate keys were recovered, with blades believed smuggled in through a window.

De Leon Knights Visit Comanche Lodge for Initiation

Twelve representatives from De Leon Lodge Number 267 of the Knights of Pythias visited Comanche Lodge Number 154 on February 24 to witness the initiation of five candidates to the second degree. Johns Hart Reappointed Captain of Roads

John S. Hart is reappointed to head the roads department serving Comanche and a yet unspecified district. Hart joined the Highway Division at its creation and served through Governors Neff and Ferguson, with his experience to guide road development in the new district.

Opportunity Seen in Egg Adougations

The Bankhead Poultry Producers Association, serving Eastland Cisco and nearby areas, shipped its second carload of eggs in a month as it targets a car a day for New York. Eastland county, the so called egg basket, drives a large share, with Tarrant County also showing promise. An Arlington organization formed a year ago and a national expert see Texas becoming a major poultry and egg producer. The associate grew fast, aided by oil wealth, and more than 500 090 laying hens are counted with weekly joiners. Quality remains the community watchword as eggs fuel local development.

Inter scholastic League meet set for Comanche dates

March 25 and 26 have been announced as the Inter scholastic League meet dates to be held in Comanche. Superintendent W G Barrett will oversee arrangements and urges the county to support turning the meet into a major countywide event.

Local ice dealer J. R. Barry argues Comanche should pursue a milk condensing plant after Tupelo Mississippi secured one. He notes Carnation Milk Co plans more southern plants, and explains the Tupelo model pays producers 30 cents per gallon, with twice daily collection, creating substantial profits for nearby farmers if Comanche acts with similar effort.

Community loses modern brick building

A complaint notes coupons were clipped from the Chief before subscribers could receive the paper. The coupons, tied to a big circulation drive offering three Chevrolet cars and fifty-one prizes, must not be removed from rural route boxes or other delivery points unless properly authorized.

Brownwood announces the election and acceptance of H Burks as secretary of the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce with duties starting March 3. Burks, a Comanche resident, helped locate Highway No 10 through Comanche and has worked as a locating engineer for the State Highway Department.

Glass Factory Possibility Noted in Comanche

Comanche I s rich in high grade glass sand and new natural gas. Mr Moore, manager of the gas company, believes supply will last for years and could support a car sized glass industry. The chamber and citizens urged active interest to attract the plant and boost local wealth.

Sipe Springs school house destroyed by fire

Tuesday night an air of tragedy struck Sipe Springs as the school house burned from a flue fire in the auditorium. The building valued at 10 000 was a total loss with contents also destroyed. residents aided in attempts to control the blaze and no replacement plans were announced for the remaining term.

Mrs. Romeo Walker directs a public speaking class preparing two one act plays Dust of the Road and In 1899 for early dates. The class will compete in the State Tournament for one act plays at Brownwood March 11 and 12.

Infant of J. L. Crow Burned To Death

Nine month old J. L. Crow died in Dallas from burns after a newspaper ignited a gas heater at his uncle Gilbert Crawford’s home Tuesday. Funeral services at Mrs. Ben S. Crow’s residence will be led by Rev. John O Keefe and Rev. Gus Rummage. Burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. He was known locally as Jessie Crow, son of Mrs. J. P. Crow, who left Comanche as a child.

Comanche county districts report 2250.00 in delinquent local school tax and independent districts with under 560 scholars add 2900.00, totaling over 5000.00 delinquent school tax for all districts except Comanche and De Leon.
