Veterans Building fund drive slow. $7,000 still needed

Collections lag as Herbert Goodson leads renewed efforts by American Legion and VFW posts to raise the remaining seven thousand dollars for the Veterans Building. The modern brick facility will serve veterans and the public with a banquet hall, club rooms, kitchen, and caretaker living quarters. Donations of any size are urged, with a weekly donor list to be printed in The Chief. Contributions can be made at Comanche Bank or through Legion and VFW leaders J. E. Lightfoot, Fane Waldrop, and Herbert Goodson.

Waldrop Announces Candidacy for Comanche Mayor

Fane Waldrop launched his campaign for Mayor of Comanche with a formal announcement to appear in The Chief's political column. He is son of the late R B Waldrop and co owner of the Owl Confectionery with brother Dale, a former WWII Seabee veteran and current Post Commander of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Euell Arthur Announces Candidacy for City Council

Euell Arthur, owner of Arthur Chevrolet in Comanche, announces his bid for City Council this week. He previously ran two years ago and lost by one vote. Arthur is the son of Ed and Mrs. Ed Arthur of Winters and grandson of the late J B Arthur, former City Marshal of Comanche.

CHS Teachers To Play Girls Cage Team March 11

Comanche High School hosts a March 11 girls basketball double feature in which the Comanche Public School faculty team, coached by Hattie Brightman and C Klingman, challenges the CHS first team. Also scheduled is a Comanche B team game against De Leon with proceeds supporting the nasium Fund.

Miss Johnson Weds Monselle O'Brien in Fort Worth Ceremony

Lucille Johnson became the bride of Hugh Monselle O'Brien in a February 18 Fort Worth ceremony officiated by Rev. J. C. Cash. Attendants were Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Shaw. The groom, a World War II veteran, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh O'Brien of Route 2 Comanche. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keiffer Johnson of Route 2 Comanche. The couple will reside on the O'Brien farm in the Sweetwater community, Route 2, Comanche.

Chaffin To Aid Dallas Schools

Virgil Chaffin, famed as Comanche Public Schools' superintendent, was invited by Dallas Public Schools to assist in evaluating three Dallas high schools. He will travel March 9 with Comanche High School Principal M. T. Camp for a three day assignment, with travel and hotel expenses covered.

Mrs. M. O. Morgan Claimed By Death

Mrs. Marriott Odell Morgan 63 of the Gustine area died January 10 after a five month illness. Funeral services were held January 11 at the First Baptist Church of Gustine with Rev. S. J. Isham officiating and burial in Union Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons R. B. Ewing Jr Bertis Harris Glen Harris Roy Crownover Arthur and Walter Ewing. She was born October 19 1883 in Hamilton to W. M. and Nancy Savage. Survived by husband D. P. Morgan and children Mrs. R. B. Ewing Mrs. Cleo Ewing Bethel Harris William E. Morgan Troy Morgan and J. B. Morgan. sister Geneva Lovelace and brothers Hervey Savage Roe Savage Terrence Savage. All near relatives except Terrence attended the funeral. She joined the Baptist Church in childhood and remained active.

Annual Methodist Revival Begins Here Wednesday

The First Methodist Church of Comanche schedules a revival from Wednesday March 12 through Sunday March 23 with preaching twice daily. Visiting evangelist Rev. Quay Parmer, a former Army preacher with the 5th Armored Division, will lead the revival and appeal urges church members to invite and pray for strong attendance and spiritual renewal.

The Comanche Study Club with 25 members is compiling a new cookbook to be published soon. It will feature several hundred recipes and include advertisements, following the group’s last issue in 1927.

Whisky still seized on Comanche farm by joint officers

Comanche County Sheriff Gaston Boykin Brown County Sheriff Otis Shaw and Constable Leonard McKinzie led a raid that uncovered a copper still a 50 gallon drum eight gallons of white lightning corn whiskey 110 gallons of mash and a cache of whiskey in feed trough. An arrest was made and partisan probes continue into other suspects.

Dr. E. E. Blackwood, founder of the Blackwood Clinic & Hospital, is a candidate for City Council. He has practiced in Comanche since 1944 after earlier service in Raton New Mexico and Dawson Texas. He is a 1940 graduate of Des Moines Still College. His brother Dr. W. D. Blackwood has worked with him at the hospital since 1946.

He hails from a longstanding Comanche County family, is son of Mrs. Dave Cunningham, and recently lost his father. Funeral Rites For H O Allen Held In Wichita Falls

H O Allen former manager of J T Mays & Company furniture store died at his home in Wichita Falls after a months long illness. Funeral services were held at Wesleyan Methodist Church in Wichita Falls with interment in Mineral Wells. He is survived by his wife and one daughter.

Comanche Lions Lead State in Red Cross Drive Results

Comanche Lions Club added 63 members in January raising total to 144 and ranking second in the nation. Pat Cagle led as president with L. R. Smallwood chairing the drive. award recipients gained two or more new members. Comanche County also first in Texas to exceed its 1947 Red Cross quota with George R. Willis praising the club’s effort.

Rabbit Drive at Thommarson Farm In Comanche Area

A rabbit drive will be held at J. W. Thommarson farm 34 miles northeast of Comanche on Wednesday March 12. An old fashioned Comanche stew will be served at noon and ammunition will be available. Everyone is invited to attend.
