McCharen, Former County Judge, Dies in Abilene

R. 5. McCharen served Comanche County as judge from 1935 to 1941. He died Monday in Abilene at his daughter’s home after years of ill health. Funeral at First Methodist Church De Leon, with Rev. Thrash and Rev. Smoot officiating. Burial in De Leon Cemetery. Survived by widow Mittie Crawford McCharen, daughter Oma Mae Champion, six other daughters, a son, twenty-three grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, a sister, and two half sisters.

Comanche Rodeo Parade and Queen Contest Planned

Plans are complete for Comanche’s Fifteenth Annual Rodeo July 7 8 9 with a Lions Club parade at 5 pm July 7. Prizes 15 10 and 5. Parade Marshal Jimmy Carpenter. stock by Lloyd Woodley. Queen contest invites entries from Comanche County community groups. rodeo features various events and top clowns. Homecoming at Purves Planned for July 31

Final plans were made at Purves for the school homecoming to be held July 31 at the building. A picnic lunch will be served at noon. Everyone is asked to invite relatives and friends and extend invites to former teachers and pastors. A visitor from Dallas, Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Stanley and son Rickey, are vacationing with relatives in Comanche.

Girl Scout Day Camp At Lake Banes Attracts 85 Scouts

The four day camp at Lake Banes ended with 85 scouts leaders and helpers in attendance. Brownie and Intermediate troops plus senior troops participated under the South American San Juan theme with each troop naming a camp title and a flag raising to start daily activities. Patsy Atwood led songs and games while Mrs. Bessie Morris supplied nursing services and was thanked by the group. Mrs. Walter Jack Barret served as Camp Director coordinating planning.

Mr and Mrs Barney Evans of Comanche announce the birth of a daughter named Ann Claire at the local hospital on Thursday morning June. The mother and baby are doing nicely.

Wheat Farmers Vote Saturday on Marketing Quotas

Wheat growers in Comanche County will vote on June 25 to decide if marketing quota controls apply to the 1956 wheat crop. A two thirds yes vote will mean quotas with penalties for excess wheat, while a less than one third no vote removes quotas but keeps acreage allotments for price support. Polling runs 8 am to 7 pm at the Comanche County ASC office.

National Rural Electrification approves Mid-States Construction of Dallas for Section 1 of Comanche County Rural Telephone lines. Work to begin Monday with a $156,111.13 contract and 120 days allowed. Local cooperative holds $666,000 loans for extensions and equipment.

Baptist Youth Camp at Lake Brownwood

Twenty two youths from Comanche Baptist churches and about fifteen from other county Baptist churches attend a weeklong encampment at Lake Brownwood. They travel with Jack Wheat and Rev. Bob McConnell and return Friday afternoon. About 550 Baptist youths from District 16 across Comanche Hamilton Mills Tom Green McCulloch Brown and Runnels counties join Bible study and recreation led by Rev. Guy Self as camp pastor and Rev. McConnell as song leader. Local churches represented include First East Side and Victory.

Homer Palmer Struck By Car in San Antonio

Homer Palmer a 55 year old book keeper for the Durham Peanut Company of Comanche was seriously injured when struck by a car while crossing a street in San Antonio. He suffered head injuries and leg fractures. He is hospitalized at Nix Memorial Hospital as his condition improves and one leg is set with the other to be treated in about ten days.
