Rev E H Lightfoot 62 becomes pastor of Comanche First Methodist Church in exchange of pulpits with Rev Raymond M Burton of Cisco First Church. Lightfoot, longtime church leader and uncle of J E Lightfoot, is joined by Hal D Caskey and others assigned to various circuits across the region.
Reverend Bruce Th will ordain Tobias Witte Tupime as pastor at Dust Church. The ceremony and anointing take place Sunday with East Side members and Floyd family invited.
Promoter W. B. Nowlin says the De Leon Jubilee on July 4 will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with top talent Elvis Presley from Shreveport and other stars. Admission 50 cents for children under 12 and 1 dollar for adults. parking free. Five renowned quartets including the Statesman, Deep South, Blackwood, Stamps, and Ozark Quartets will perform in Hillbilly style.
The Junior and Senior Red Cross Life Saving Course at Lake Eanes Pool, Comanche, begins Monday June 20. Eligible youths 12 to 15 in grades 7 to 10 may pursue Junior certificates, while those 16 or in grade 11 may seek Senior certificates. Qualified students gain access to further Water Safety Aid instruction starting July 11 and pool admission is free. Education overseen by Murray Allman of Brownwood. register at the Lake Eanes Pool or City Secretary’s Office with Mrs Sybil Stewart.
Weekly effort seeks church attendance reports from area Sunday schools. Superintendents are asked to bring or call in figures to 210 each week after contacting all churches.
Roy Langston, reared at Sidney, named pastor of First Church Ennis. A. S. Gafford, son of Dave Gafford of Comanche, reappointed District Superintendent at Waco. D. A. Chisholm, reared at Proctor, appointed pastor of Herring Avenue Methodist Church Waco. A man from Abi lene extends studies at McMurry College.
Plans are underway for a Comanche Amateur Rodeo on July 7 8 and 9 with Ikey Pipes of the Comanche Roping Club leading sponsors. The Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club co sponsor a July 7 parade at 5 pm with parade chairman Jimmy Carpenter. Prizes will be awarded, and local civic groups are urged to prepare entries. The 1954 rodeo drew near capacity crowds and featured tough stock from Lloyd Woodley. Events include bareback bronc wild horse racing cow milking girls barrel racing calf roping boys calf riding and Brahma bull riding. Two top rodeo clowns will attend.
The Ladies of the First Methodist Church will stage a rummage sale Friday and Saturday June 24 25 in the Armstrong Cox Building on the north side of the square. We will have plenty of good clothing and other articles, say organizers.
The Comanche Lions Club sponsors the Rodeo Parade on opening day inviting firms clubs and individuals to enter for cash prizes. Contact Herbert Goodson Commerce acro f, James Wilkerson Comanche Chief, or others by phone. Teens Contest offers three prizes. Queen presented at the second rodeo performance. Parade Marshal is Jimmy Carpenter.
The Comanche County Pension Club No 1 will meet Saturday afternoon June 18 at 2 o'clock in the County Courtroom. Secretary Mrs Effie Shannon says the group has important business to come before the club, will hear talks, and read letters. She invites all interested to attend.
John F Clayton a Greenville Mississippi CHS graduate and son of Jack Clayton was commissioned as a second lieutenant at Greenville Air Force Base. He was honored as a distinguished graduate of the United States Air Force Pilot Training with leadership praise and encouragement for regular appointment if he pursues a career in the Air Force.
Farmers Home Administration extends acceptance date for Emergency Feed Program in designated counties to close of business June 22 1955. County FHA Committees may certify eligible applicants for a sixty day feed grain supply beyond June 30 based on on hand supply. Alleed must on or before June 30.
Comanche County faced rainfall up to 22 inches with hail and damaging winds Tuesday and Wednesday. City measurements show 2.03 inches Tuesday and 51 inches Wednesday. Newburg reports 3.3 inches. Lakes Eanes and Comanche rose sharply, with spillway distances narrowing. Lake Comanche rose 12 inches more to within six feet of its spillway. Wind damaged television towers, plate glass, roofs, and hangars at the Comanche airport. De Leon saw the heaviest damage Wednesday night.
Higginbothams won 6 5 over Dudleys to stay ahead in the Comanche Little League standings. Saints beat Higginbothams 8 7 on Friday, while Dudley Bros. routed First Baptist RAs 12 3. Tuesday results saw RA's beat Raiders 6 4 and Jack Wheat RA’s rally.
Comanche Palmetto Polo club journeys to Weatherford next Wednesday night for their first game of the season. Coached by Joe Waring and George Willis, the team has practiced two months at the local rodeo grounds. Starting lineup against Weatherford lists E J McDougal as goalie, Lonnie McDougal and Bally Robertson as guards, Donnie McDougal at center, Ikey Pipes at forward, with Joe Henderson, Jack Riley, and Joe Waring also in action.
A Sunday afternoon singing is planned at the Church of Christ in Comanche. The event starts at 2:30 PM on June 20 and invites community participation.
