Hailstorms Wreck Comanche Storm Causes Heavy Damage

A Wednesday hailstorm battered Comanche with baseball size stones for about ten minutes. Property damage runs into hundreds of thousands with 79 high school window panes broken and many cars damaged. Utility lines fell and power outages delayed warning sirens but crews restored service quickly.

Venable Named First Baptist Church Music Director

David Venable will begin as Director of Music at First Baptist Church of Comanche on Sunday July 29 in a part time post. He leads congregational singing and church and youth choirs and will be aided by a church Music Committee. Venable comes from First Baptist of Early where he served three years and leads the Comanche Indian Band, with duties arranged to avoid conflict with his work in the Comanche Independent School District band program.

Fire Damages Chief Motel Room Near Comanche

A motel guest room at Chief Motel on the Brownwood Highway sustained fire damage to bedding and carpet shortly before 8 pm on Thursday June 12. Fire Marshal John T. Carpenter said the closed room likely kept the fire in check and the building suffered no other damage. A separate incident Monday night June 16 near 8 pm involved a shorted TV set at 1100 East Highland, home of Mrs. Devin Froh, causing no fire damage to the residence.

Hodges Named New Assistant Coach at Comanche High

Don Hodges of Midlothian is hired as Biology teacher and assistant high school coach for next year. He holds a master's from North Texas State, has six years’ teaching and coaching experience, and will move to Comanche in July with his wife and two children. T. J. Davidson resigns as Vocational Agriculture teacher at Comanche High to join Cooke County Junior College Gainesville to help establish the program, remaining until June 30.

FFA State Rodeo Set for Gustine July 3-5

The 1969 State Finals FFA Championship Rodeo, produced by J. E Morris, will be held at the Gustine FFA Rodeo Arena from July 3 to 5 with events including bareback riding bull riding calf roping and girls barrel racing. Admission 50 cents for children and 1 for adults. A street parade is slated for Saturday evening.

Wayne Preston, CHS basketball coach for two years, accepts junior high post at Snyder. He is 45 and had two winning seasons at Comanche, tying for the District title in his first year and winning it this year. The Prestons plan to move to Snyder around July 1.

Comanche ISD Establishes In-District Tax Office

The Comanche Independent School District School Board voted to open its own tax office on October 1 1969. The office will be on the high school campus in the old band hall, which will also house the superintendent’s office. Tax statements for 1969 will come from the County Tax Assessor-Collector, while collections begin in the new office. The board also approved a computerized tax program from Steck Company.

Rush Creek Watershed Groundbreaking Held

Groundbreaking for the Rush Creek Watershed flood control project was held with about 100 attendees. The plan covers 188 160 acres from Proctor Lake to Rising Star and includes Site 12 among 13 structures. Lyles and Lyles Construction won the $189 341 7 bid to build the earth fill dam capable of storing about 400 acre feet of water in the sediment pool.
