The 1969 Comanche Rodeo kicks off Thursday afternoon June 19 with a 6:00 parade featuring floats exhibits and riding clubs. Prizes include first place trophies for best overall float and riding club categories plus night belt buckles for calf scramble winners.
A large crowd gathered at the Junior High Cafetorium to welcome the Carter Blood Bank Bloodmobile. With the Jaycees Young Farmers Chamber Lions Club and local hospitals aiding, over 100 donors pledged blood. The Jaycees signed up the most pledges and won $190 sponsored by Comanche Hospital and Mims Memorial Hospital.
Barbara Williams County 4-H agent announces the dress revue at Comanche Jr High Cafetorium. The event begins at 7 30 pm Saturday evening with all interested people invited to attend.
The drive supplied needed blood for citizens of Comanche and surrounding territory. Refreshments were provided by South Park Super Save Red and White Thriftee Mart Neds and milk by the Comanche County Dairy Assn.
Local Jaycees win a $100 prize in a blood donor contest run with Comanche Hospital and Mims Memorial. The Young Farmers and civic clubs coordinated through Carter County to supply donors, with Mrs Virginia Turner and Harold Adcock among those recognized.
FBI and Texas Rangers announced the capture of 36 year old William Howard Wood of Brownfield on a Comanche precinct warrant. Three others were arrested in Topeka as suspects tied to the April 28 Gustine bank burglary with over $12 000 taken from the safe and deposit boxes.
Comanche County cotton growers voted 94 percent in a mail referendum to approve transfer of 1970 upland cotton allotments out of the county and into the state. Transfers within the county or from other counties to Comanche are allowed if similarly approved locally. Deadline for applications to the ASC County Committee will be announced.
The Comanche Public Schools Board named two elementary instructors for the next year. Martha Stephens of Waco and Nancy Clendenen of Odessa were chosen. Stephens, Baylor graduate with East Texas State graduate work, taught near Waco and will live in Board Church. Clendenen, UT graduate, taught in Odessa and will reside in Newburg with her husband on a purchased farm.
Dr James C Slider optometrist receives UC developed electronic tonometer for quick eye pressure readings aiding early glaucoma detection. Glaucoma causes about 14 percent of new blindness. pressure measurement helps screening, especially for those over forty. prior methods required anesthesia.
Proctor Reservoir Weather Station releases a 24 hour temperature and moisture report. Temperatures show daily highs and lows across June 5 through June 11 with values ranging from 77 58 on June 5 to 91 65 on June 11. Rainfall amounts are incomplete but noted as hailfall data through June 5.
Comanche County brush control and range improvement groups urge landowners to join a state program to fund brush and weed research. A 1 cent per acre annual levy for five years will finance studies and equipment support, with oversight by a state association and local committees. John Robertson leads the county effort, with John Mathews of Abilene heading the state association.
Lt Gov Barnes attended a Comyn Theney dedication while unveiling a historic marker in front of a frame post office building now used for cattle feed. He urged rededication to founding values, preserving the church and town, and ensuring a future Comyn.
Comanche merchants introduce NuWay Stamps valid through June 21. Buyers collect stamps in each book and redeem a full booklet for 3.00 in Higginbothams merchandise. Participating stores include Elliott Gulf Station Kilgore Gulf Station Tally Bait Shop Tally Station and Grocery J D R Texaco Thru Tee South Park Super Save and Higginbotham.
Dr James B Henderson executive director of the Texas Animal Health Commission announces the reaccreditation of Comanche County as a Modified Accredited Tuberculosis Area. County Agent Flood M Key has received the certificate valid for six years. The commission thanks residents for cooperation and seeks continued support to maintain the status.
Randall Puckett has moved to Rt. 4 and becomes hardware buyer for Higginbotham Bros. and Co. He arrives from Ennis after three years as buyer for San Antonio Builders Supply Co. Previously he served Higginbotham Pearl Stone in Dallas and Retail Hardware in Dallas. He and his wife Jeannette have three children and attend a Baptist church.
