D. Dingwall, 86, longtime Comanche shoe shop owner, recalls post Civil War service as U S Cavalry Scout patrolling the Oregon Trail area. He describes a 1866 pursuit of two desperadoes, a night raid on an emigrant train, and a tense chase across Wyoming's plains ending with a close rifle confrontation.

Comanche County editor R. L. Scott of the De Leon Vree Press was elected President of the Texas Press Association at the annual San Angelo meeting. Corsicana’s Lowry Martin was named vice president with Sam Harben continuing as secretary for his 24th year and B. F Harigel as treasurer. Executive committee members include Harr y Hornsby Uvalde M B Smith Farmersville H H Jackson Coleman M B Hanks Abilene J L Greer Denison and Joe Kempton. Mineral Wells chosen as next year’s meeting site. Scott began as editor of the DeLeon Free Press in 1910, with wartime interruption.
Comanche prison population dwindled to a low as Ed Bynum and Clarence Webb were moved to Stephenville by Sheriff Dwight Brightman and Deputy Turner Sanders to rendezvous with Bud Russell, State Agent, who sent them to Huntsville. Webb faces a two year forgery sentence and Bynum two years on an alleged liquor charge. Billingslea, jailed for cattle theft, was taken to Stephenville but returned to Comanche due to Huntsville crowding. Only one prisoner remained in Comanche jail Saturday morning.
A June 11 1981 note from Stephenville Texas recounts a Abilene man aged 98 and his 96 year old wife seeking to repl ant trees. The writer muses on heredity long life fruit eating habit and lime deposits in bones while hinting at a continuation on the last page.
Comanche schools may receive a $3500 belated consolidation bonus under a new law. Eligible districts include Gustine $1000, Pettit $1000, Sidney $500, Custer $1000, May $500, Blanket $500, Carleton $500. The aid applies to consolidations dating back to 1917 that were not previously awarded.
Dr KE Ammons formerly of Fort Worth opened a dental office in Comanche using Dr JM Cochran's former rooms. Raised in Bosque County he practiced at Stanton after graduating Texas Dental College Houston in 1928 and moved to Fort Worth a few weeks ago. Mrs Ammons, a Stanton teacher, will assist.
About 75 women and 4-H Club girls at Hasse School joined the Live At Home campaign led by County Agent J A Barton and Home Demonstration Agent Elizabeth Temple to sign up 75000 quarts of canned goods for summer and fall. They set a family goal of 919 quarts and 30 vegetable varieties, pledged to begin calf canning, and planned budgets including 120 leafy vegetables and 160 quarts of fruit among others. The day featured canning demos with squash pease beans kraut and beets, plus talks by Barton Temple Hoff and musical entertainment by the Meroneysis.
Dr J J Osterhout and wife arrive from Goldthwaite to begin equipping Comanche’s new hospital. The surgeon and nurse plan to install modern hospital equipment and will reside in the J R Eanes home south of the facility.
George G Smith, son of G E Smith of Comanche, launches Talk a new Dallas based magazine inviting public opinion submissions. Monthly prize of 5.09 is awarded. first winner Miss Minnie Cunningham of Comanche for The Perils of a School Teacher. Smith previously led Comanche Arrow Fea and Howard Payne Weekly.
