A storm at the A. D Jones farm in Sipe Springs caused a lightning strike after midnight Tuesday destroying four of five 500 barrel oil tanks belonging to Harvest Queen and Elevator Company Plainview. About 1,000 barrels had been removed earlier that day and flames were seen as far as Comanche and Cross Plains.
About 2900 ballots were cast in Comanche County as voters picked Beaty over Robinson for tax assessor collector 1528 to 1344 Elliott defeated Gressett 708 to 447 for Commissioner No 1 Dunn edged Miller by nine votes 320 to 311 for Commissioner No 3 Salois beat Stephens by 320 for Constable No 1 and McDonald won the state district judge race 1431 to 1071 over Davidson A box by box tally is printed elsewhere in this issue.
The Comanche County delegation travels to Austin on Tuesday June 14 to participate in the State Democratic Convention. The group of D F Caraway Bob Carpenter Joe Waring Albert Brannan Dale Steele Mrs George Rollins and N E Palmer vote as a unit per county rule. The delegation supports Lyndon B Johnson for president and will also represent Comanche at the September Governor's Convention and the July National Democratic Convention.
The Comanche rodeo drew large crowds as teams competed for the annual title. Wayne Shaw of Blanket led junior roping with 23 points and individual winners across events included Billy Albin and Judy Morris for various barrel races and calf events, with awards and belts presented at the Friday event.
R E Edwards appointed Assistant County Supervisor for the Farmers Home Administration in Comanche. He began duty June 6. A Terrell County rancher and World War II Marine Corps veteran, he holds a Texas Tech degree. He and Mrs Edwards with daughters Margaret and Sue now reside at 204 Williams Dr in Comanche, moving from Western New Mexico where he worked in school administration.
William T. Russell will be honored with funeral services at 4:00 p.m. Friday June 10 at Comanche Funeral Home with Rev. Lee Roy Woolsey officiating. Burial follows in Zion Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Russell's nephews. He died Wednesday June 8 in Houston.
Dr Bax ter Greer will preach Religion and Prosperity at 11 am at the First Presbyterian Church and 8 pm topic Victory Through Surrender. Mrs Meyers will play organ. Sunday School starts at 10 am. H M Cauley is general superintendent. Young People meet at 8 pm. Jean Rachels and spouse are adult advisors. An editorial quip about indigestion follows.
Dr J C Terrell and J W Moore announce a 50 percent capital increase from 50000 to 75000 dollars via a 25000 dollar stock dividend. The bank reports 75000 capital and 125000 surplus with about 225000 in undivided profits and reserves.
Mrs. Minnie L. Kay 81 of Proctor died Thursday in Brownwood after a lifetime in Comanche County. Her burial will be at Proctor Cemetery at 2 30 p.m. Friday June 10. Survived by three sons E C Kay of Buda L H Kay of Ranger and H P Kay of Dallas and two daughters Mrs Sam Hamlett of Brownwood and Mrs Tullus Smith of Stephenville.
Comanche pool hosts two week Learn To Swim sessions starting Monday June 13 directed by Jac King with Kenneth McNutt and student assistants. Open to ages five and up, with one hour slots from 9 to 12 and additional advanced, diving classes. Registration now under way. no instruction charge beyond regular pool admission 15c children 35c adults.
Public notice of a delinquent tax suit in Comanche County Texas. The State of Texas and County of Comanche, with City of Comanche and Comanche Independent School District as parties, seek judgment on delinquent taxes for Block 024 Duncan Survey within the City Limits of Comanche. The court requires appearance and defense by the first Monday after the 47th day from publication, date A D 1600 noted in error.
Comanche County 4 H members earned two first place awards and a fourth at the Statewide 4 H Roundup at Texas A M College. Grady Earl Hall led as an individual winner while Kay Rachels and Dina Baxter won a team first in Soil Range and Water Conservation. Dickie Dickson and Sara Lou McCullough placed fourth as a team in Farmer Co Op Demonstration.
Plans call for an awards night at Lake Eanes Park Comanche Tuesday hosted by the Comanche Lions Jaycees and Chamber of Commerce with Beattie Hasse Newburg Soda Springs and Stag Creek communities and Texas utility groups Texas Plant Food Education Society and Texas A&M Extension Service. Angus Dickson Jr. leads. Gail Dudley hosts. Reagan Brown and W N Williamson will attend with Stag Creek runner up in the state Community Improvement Contest. Barbecue and musical entertainment accompany the program.
