Layne to Marshall Wright years ago.
At Newburg Baptist Church on Sunday the lean Baptist Church will host preaching by visiting speaker J. Briscoe. Carter, the pastor, announced two services at 11 a.m. and 8 30 p.m. confirming the day’s schedule.
Palace Theatre Gustine presents Dick Powell Madeline troll Alice Fay and the Ritz Brothers in a program with bargain prices two adults twenty cents and two children one cent.
Heavy rain across the county caused widespread damage to roads and bridges with losses estimated between six thousand and ten thousand dollars. Steel bridges on Indian Creek and Cox's Creek were wrecked or toppled, several wooden bridges washed away, and Highway 81 near Goldthwaite closed due to high water. Crop losses included five acres of wheat and fifteen of corn plus extensive barley and oats damage on Mercer Creek and nearby farms.
A play titled Light house Nan will be performed at Sipe Springs tonight. The Epworth League announced by Miss Earleen Morris, its secretary, that the event is the league’s entertainment program for locals.
Mrs. Wil Schwartz sent to The Chief Office a cabbage head weighing slightly over six pounds, raised within the city limits of Comanche. She notes an unusually good crop of cabbage in her garden and highlights local produce.
Miss Louise Greenwaldt, a junior at Texas Wesleyan College in Fort Worth, received a $60 scholarship from the home economics department at the annual commencement exercises last week for outstanding work in home economics.
Gus H. Frossard of Comanche married Miss Clara Mae Underwood of Gorman in Abilene on Wednesday. After visiting the Gulf coast the couple will reside in Comanche. Mrs. Underwood is Ira Underwood’s daughter and a longtime Gorman school faculty member. Mr. Frossard is Minta Frossard’s son and works in Higginbotham Bros. wholesale department.
The softball standings show Biggs ll 4 losses and 7 games while Fagan is 5 3 8 games, Higginbothams and Dudleys at 4 3 and 4 3 respectively with Ww. OO. W. at 1 loss in nine games. Week results include Fagan 12 Biggs 11 and Comanche 11 Stephenville 9.
Ida Rebecca Hart of Comanche age 82 died Monday after a brief illness begun Sunday. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Methodist Church with Rev Charles H. Cole officiating. burial at Oakwood Cemetery. She was active in the Daughters of Confederacy and church work and owned significant property including several business houses. Survived by sisters Mrs Virginia Lindsey and Mrs Mary Allison.
Miss Tommy Zell Norwood formerly of Comanche and daughter of Mr and Mrs N W Norwood of Stephenville was chosen Stephen ville High School’s most popular girl. She served as secretary treasurer of the senior class assistant editor of The Yellow Jacket yearbook and member of several social clubs. She graduates valedictorian from Stephenville Junior High and salutatorian from Stephenville Senior High. Her name will be engraved on a plaque in Superintendent Burnett's office. She is a granddaughter of Mr and Mrs W A LaGrone of Co.
R. K. Shelton owner of the Red Gin sold his property to the Comanche Gin Company Co-Operative, former Hasse Gin Company. The new cooperative plans 25 cents per hundred for ginning and may move the Hasse gin. Shelton remains in Comanche with no announced plans. Gin receipts at Hasse last fall were under 100 bales.
Services will be conducted at Harmony Methodist Church Sunday according to Rev. H. J. Sanders. Sunday School at 11 a. m. Preaching at 1 p. m. and 8 p. m.
Comanche Independent School District approves plans for a brick and tile gymnasium drawn by Fort Worth architect C. M. Love. Bond approval from the Attorney General expected this week. The building aims to be the finest in the area and open to the public at the start of the school year. Bids are to be received June 29.
E. S. Fagan Sammy Waisman Charles Hoffman and Karl Shock attended the Weatherford district meeting. They reported a splendid gathering highlighted by Fort Worth Frontier Fiesta entertainment and dinner hosted by the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce.
Mayor Jno E Hoff announced Thursday morning start of hot topping on Comanche streets with project supervisor Bobby Stungn. San Antonio engineer Clay Simpson arrived to lay plans for asphalt pouring approved by the State Highway Department. Work begins at the Post Office, moves west on Sidney Street, then to the Chilton residence and hard surfaces West Main and East Main to local landmarks.
Miss Meta McCharen married James M. Smith at the Methodist Church in Comanche on Sunday June 6 at 10 a.m. The ceremony was led by Rev. Charles H. Cole. The couple plans to reside in Hobbs New Mexico. Mrs. Smith is the daughter of Judge and Mrs. R. S. McCharen. Mr. Smith is the son of Rev. George G. Smith, former Methodist pastor.
Miss Margaret and Grace Lacy are enrolled in summer school at Howard Payne College, pursuing study during the college's summer term.
Comanche School Board will meet this afternoon in the County Superintendent's office to classify county schools for the coming year. Members include C. L. Macon of Robinson Springs as trustee at large Walter Fritts P A Pettit H Shockley and J A Lightfoot with County Superintendent B Ray Mc Corkle serving as secretary.
New officers of the Comanche Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star were installed at a meeting led by Mrs. J. C. Helm. Vivian Cleveland was named Worthy Matron with C. O. Lee as Worthy Patron and Nannie Greene Little as Assistant Matron among other posts.
E L Curb formerly at Sipe Springs School was chosen as Dus ter School superintendent for next year. He succeeds J F Jeter who resigned. Re-elected teachers include Faith Elliott Billy Elliott Jewell Smith and B W Chambers and J D Pilcher.
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Stanton will rebuild their College Avenue home into a modern rock veneer house. The project includes interior remodeling and redecorating to reflect recent local new-structure trends.
Road crews begin hard surfacing on Comanche streets with sections roped off to direct traffic away from work zones. Mayor John E. Hopf appeals for citizen cooperation to stay clear of restricted areas.
Laymen's services will be conducted at the Methodist Church at Hasse Sunday night June 20 at eight o'clock. An interesting program is being prepared and the public is cordially invited to attend, according to W. A. Cole.
Joe Wagner Jr of Comanche married Ruth Howe of De Leon in the De Leon Baptist Church. Rev R G Alexander officiated and the couple plan to reside in Fort Worth after visiting family in Comanche. Wagner is a Howard Payne graduate and Texas Company employee. Mrs Wagner taught at Sabano School.
Interest grows as Rev. A Edwin Wilson preaches at the Comanche Baptist Church now into its second week. Attendees report earnest sermons rich in gospel message and engaging delivery drawing more worshippers.
The Commissioners Court sits as an Equalization Board to review property assessments for State and County Taxes. Members include County Judge R. S. McCharen and Precinct Commissioners Leverett Little Lewis Brandt and Ed resistor. Notices will be mailed to property owners whose values are deemed high or low.
The Texas State Aid law raises rural teacher pay with a minimum of 85 dollars per month and up to 100 dollars for experienced educators. Principals’ salaries depend on staff size, and eligibility for State Aid now requires 4 to 500 students. De Leon earns eligibility with 460 pupils, while Comanche at over 800 is excluded.
Repair work on the Lake Eanes swimming pool, damaged by Sunday overflow, progressed Wednesday and should finish today. The pool will reopen Sunday and swimmers, resting for several days, are expected to resume the sport.
