Bentsen forecasts farm bill target prices higher but below Senate plan

Senator Lloyd Bentsen said Congress will likely approve commodity target prices higher than present levels yet below the Senate's latest figures. He expects a presidential signature on a compromise farm bill after conferees from the Senate and House hammer out details in coming weeks. He notes rising production costs since 1973 and warns the scheme could raise food prices if not aligned with costs. He cites wheat targets moving toward 3.10 in 1978 and corn to 2.28, with cotton rising to 1.1 and rice remaining unchanged, while voicing concern over peanut program costs in Texas.
