The town buzzes with wedding plans as June is named for brides. Stores advertise bargains on jewelry, appliances, and a new Mercury at Motor Company while shoppers anticipate frames, rings, and midweek specials amid looming strike talk and local sales.
Vacation Bible School will run from June through June 10 at 8:30 each day. A class for beginners, juniors, and intermediates will be directed by Pastor. A well staffed depth and preparation day is set for Saturday May 4 at 2 p.m.
Comanche County Pen No 1 will meet next June 4 at 2 PM in the court at Comanche to discuss Pension Union letters from Ralph, Idaho, and New York. Secretary Finbers urges members to attend at the home of Mr or Mrs Tucker. friends invited.
Mr and Mrs J C Helm quietly observed their Golden Wedding Anniversary Tuesday at their country home three miles south of Comanche in White Point. Helm, nearly blind for nine years and managing diabetes, remains active and mentally engaged, aided by radio and his wife reading to him. The couple, both natives of East Texas, married May 31 in Sulphur Bluff and later studied at the University of Texas, where they spent their moonlit days before moving into teaching and leadership roles.
Mrs Ellen Eoff and her son in law and daughter have returned from Missouri Arkansas and Kansas after visiting her son George Eoff in Winslow Ark.
Pat Sullivan of Comanche and Jack Pettit will travel to Austin for Boys State, joining 400 other high school seniors for a week as honorary state government members. Jack Pettit is sponsored by the Comanche Lions Club and Pat Sullivan by the Rector Cunningham Post of the American Legion. both are CHS seniors.

Wel don Hicks former CHS football star and Baylor Cub letterman now works in oil fields near Lafayette Louisiana hoping to win a spot on the Baylor varsity next fall. He is joined by Jimmy Kenady Garland Baylor ministerial student both aiming for the Bear squad.
The Little League season opened last Tuesday with a strong crowd. Planned Friday double header resumes action with Higginbotham defeating Toppers in extra innings 5 3 and RA's edging Saints 14 13. Upcoming games include Pony Lions vs Lumberjacs at 7 30 and Dudley’s vs Toppers along with Saints vs Raiders.
The Agnes Graham Class of the First Methodist Church will hold a picnic Monday night at Lake Eanes Park. Mrs Roy Pinson, arrangements chair, expects full attendance and invites friends to join for an evening of fellowship, food and recreation at 7:00.
Local piano pupils from Comanche led by Mrs Gayle McCullough entered the National Fraternity of Student Musicians audition in Dublin on May 1 Their city wide circle ratings ranged from 91 to 99 with 99 for June Ferrill and Lavonne Hall The judge was Elizabeth Newman a New York City composer and teacher
Bruce Cliff died in Dallas last week and was buried in the De Leon Cemetery Sunday after services at Round Grove by Rev. Ernest Rippetoe. He once operated a barber shop in De Leon before moving to Haskell and later retired to live with his daughter Miss Clara Cliff in Dallas. He married a Rippetoe.
Mr and Mrs Boyce Brisco and their granddaughter visited from Andrews to see their daughter Mrs Walter Jack Barret and her mother Mrs Virgil Carter. The Briscos, former residents, enjoyed renewing acquaintances with local friends over the weekend.
Superintendent Virgil Chaffin reports approval by the State auditor of the Department of Education of the attendance audit. Comanche Public Schools will receive about $190000 for the next session from state funds, plus $60000 from local taxes. Additional money will be allotted for transportation and other purposes.
Sidney marks its twentieth annual homecoming on the second Sunday in June. The day includes an early worship service, a brief program before lunch, and an afternoon of singing and visiting. Singers are urged to bring song books and join in quartet singing.
Mrs T J Lasseter aged 87 died at her home in Mertzon Texas May 18 after a stroke in October. Born in Louisiana she moved to Comanche County in 1871 and married T J Lassiter in 1881. Survived by 13 children and many grandchildren with three sisters and a brother.
Proctor hosts its annual Homecoming and Cemetery Association meeting on Sunday June 12. John E. Croft, longtime Proctor resident, leads the association and expects visitors from beyond the county and state. the public is invited.
An announ cement from Comyn confirms the homecoming date of June 12. Rev. Harley Huse will deliver the 11 o’clock message and Mrs. George Caraway will lead the afternoon program. A basket lunch will be served on the church lawn at noon.
Tarleton State College will hold summer school registration on June 6, announced registrar J. E. Tompkins Jr. Classes start June 7 at 7 30 a m. The first six week term ends July 15 and second six week term runs July 18 to August 26.
In Comanche District Court Judge B B Cross granted an instructed verdict for IM K T R Co in the Ruby A Welch versus railroad suit over the 1949 Dublin crossing death of Rex Grandle Welch. The trial marked the county’s first woman juror, Mrs Jesse Hanson, delivering notable remarks during deliberations. Southwest Natural Gas wins national safety prize for 1954 with zero lost time accidents. 146 employees logged 4125 days without injury.
First Methodist Vacation Bible School opens next Sunday June 5 with Miss Marguerite Ross directing. Department heads list Kindergarten teachers Mrs Dalton Perkins and Mrs Elton McCullough, Primary leaders Mrs Tom Cox Jr and Mrs C J Thomas, Junior staff including Mrs Max Keeter Mrs Ed Burdette Mrs W D Blackwood and Mrs Ed Frensley.
The Chief reports weekly attendance well above 900 last Sunday despite holidays and several churches not reporting. The list includes Gartman View Zion Hill First Methodist First Freewill Victory Baptist Liberty Freewill United Pentecostal Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church of Christ Indian Creek East Side Baptist and others totaling 942. The paper notes some churches are missed and urges superintendents to report weekly by mail call or to the paper.
Jay Gould Hutchins 68 died at home in Brownwood after a long illness. Funeral in Rising Star Church of Christ with burial at Sipe Springs Cemetery. He was born January 27 1887 in Arkansas and survived by wife Efie Magnolia Hutchins two sons three daughters a brother and three sisters and ten grandchildren. He belonged to Rising Star Church of Christ.
Ruth Ann Coker 87 of 2825 W Gth died Sunday morning in a Fort Worth hospital after two years of ill health. Born in Panola County she moved with husband A C Coker to Fort Worth from Comanche in 1809. Survivors include sons Don and A I Coker. Services 10 a m Monday Owens Brumley Chapel with burial Oakwood Cemetery Comanche. pallbearers were nephews and Fort Worth Dallas area relatives.
Comanche High School senior Gene Manchester, valedictorian and daughter of Reverend M. F. Manchester, receives the Annual Reader's Digest Award for leadership and scholastic promise. Principal J. E. Lightfoot and staff selected her for recognition and an honorary one year subscription plus a certificate from the editor.
Cleve Callaway owner of a Comanche tin shop has shown satisfactory improvement after a heart attack two weeks ago at Medical Arts Hospital Brownwood and may be able to go home Friday.
