Farmer Demonstrates Formaldehyde Seed Treatment Against Smut
A farmer named Mr. Allen describes a method to combat oat smut by treating seed with formaldehyde. He used one pint of formaldehyde to three gallons of water for forty bushels, applying via a home made sprinkler and covering treated oats to vaporize the chemical. Other farmers reported oats treated showed less smut, with timing between threshing and sowing flexible.
