County fair officials announce the first annual Comanche County Fell Fair August 26 to 28 with extensive handicraft divisions. Food sections include cookies candies breads cakes pies and canning. Hand crafts clothing and art divisions welcome entries with rules on divisions judging and auctioning details.
The Texas Agri-Tour, a mobile home theater with a color slide program on Texas agriculture, will be part of the De Leon Peach and Melon Festival August 3 through 7. Spencer, at the Texas Center for Agriculture, outlines shopper hints for selecting and cooking Texas products, with new ideas for preparation and serving. Free recipes will be offered after the film tour, and the exhibit will be on the festival grounds.
Comanche County records draw visitors seeking vital statistics births marriages and deaths and family histories. The Comanche Chief notes that research is a personal effort, with sources ranging from cemeteries old wills and family bibles to photographs and letters.
The De Leon Peach Melon Festival runs Tuesday through Saturday with queen judging at 9 p.m. Tuesday and coronation at 9 p.m. Friday. Activities include 4-H booth judging, melon and peach judging, a street parade led by Lt. Ben Barnes, concerts, fiddlers contest, ex-student reunion, free melon slicing, public auctions, and prize drawings at Main Street venues and festival grounds.
The First Baptist Church of Comanche announces a Kindergarten Child Care Center opening in August. The program runs 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. for a Kindergarten class and full day care for preschool and after school care through grade 6. Trustees include Jack Wheat Truman Hazelrigg and others. Child Care Director is Mrs. Albert Brannan. Applications for worker helpers and registrations start August 2 with opening planned August 16.
The film Lost Generation directed by World Wide Pictures features Art Linkletter and Jack Webb and examines teen drug use and societal morals. It was shot in Eastmancolor in Alaska the Southern states mid America and Haight Ashbury San Francisco. The showing is on Wednesday August 4 at 7 30 p m at the First Baptist Church Comanche with free admission. John C Wiles invites the public.
Dr and Mrs Harry C Nyvall donated a 196 volume collection valued at 1500 to Abilene Christian College including medical surgical and treatment room texts plus fiction arts history and politics. The gift supported the new Margaret and Herman Brown Library opening in 1970 with several items already assigned to biology classes.
The City of Comanche will open a controlled Dumping Ground on Lake Eanes Rd starting Monday August 1. It will operate three days a week Monday Wednesday and Saturday from 10 am to unspecified end with four dug pits for household garbage metal dead animals and yard waste. An attendant will be on duty and citizens are urged to cooperate.
The first place Saints, local Little League champions, head to Sweetwater for the District playoff on Thursday July 29. Managers Dendy Scott Jim Culpepper and league president David Robinson met in Sweetwater to set ground rules and draw for time and matchups.
Gentle soaking rain drenched Comanche County this week with up to six inches in the southern part and Gasoline area. North of Comanche saw under an inch, Comanche city about two inches, and Proctor Dam station 1.77 inches. Farmers call it a life saver for dryland peanut crops and tank levels rise to near capacity. Recovery for summer pastures appears unlikely, but fall prospects improve.
The Proctor Reservoir Weather Station issued a 24 hour period report from 8 a.m. to 8 a.m. detailing temperatures and moisture measurements.
The Comanche Booster Club was formed Friday July 23 under the direction of the Comanche Jaycees to support Comanche High School teams. Officers elected for the coming year include Floyd Prather president Bill Parker vice president Gary Don Swearengin treasurer Johnny Miller secretary and directors D F Caraway Boyd Anthony Even Arthur and Jerry Vines. Meetings weekly Mondays at 7 30 p m after football games with basketball times varying by schedule. Dues are five dollars per member. Membership drive planned. contact officers or directors to join and back the boys and girls of Comanche High School.
