Enduring heat and drought trigger a rash of family altercations across Comanche County. From Comanche to De Leon, at least five skirmishes lead to injuries and medical care as sheriffs and peace officers respond to family fights on a busy Sunday.
Central Christian Church and other congregations sponsor July August Sunday services at St Matthew’s Episcopal Church. Sermon by Reverend Robert Bohanan of Central Christian precedes an offertory anthem by the First Methodist youth choir directed by Terry Price. Refreshments follow in the parish house. nursery will be open. all are invited.
County Clerk announces a six month window to re register brands recorded with the clerk. Betty Conway notes existing Brand records become void if not renewed and sets a five dollar renewal fee. Owners are urged to act promptly under the new legislative measure.
Gustine First Baptist announces a summer revival July 25 to August 1 with morning services at 10 a.m. and weekday evenings at 7 30 p.m. Hubert D Christian, former Crane Seminole and Burnet pastor with forty years in ministry, is the evangelist and will host the Bride of Christ radio broadcast on KCOM at 9 a.m. on July 24.
A booster club meeting for Indian football is planned for Friday night July 23 at 7 30 PM in the Jr High Cafetorium. The Jaycees and coaches organize the effort to form the local booster club.
The Comanche Jaycees swept all awards at Region 210's first regional meet in Brownwood hosted by the Brownwood Jaycees. Brownwood, Comanche, Granbury, Hamilton, and Goldthwaite clubs competed as a trophy prize funded by regional clubs. Comanche Jaycees won the trophy for most points. Bill Cotton won the Speak Up Contest.
Two veterinarians inoculated more than 5000 horses by noon Wednesday as new rules allow moves to a central point for vaccination. Horses must return to their premises for a four day quarantine. Vaccination is free and federally funded with state aid to curb spread.
E Paul Jeanes reports a barefoot intruder twice broke into his 302 E Summit residence. In the first raid a chicken dinner was disrupted and a distinct footprint left on the floor. The second visit saw theft of a small TV set a camera a transistor radio a flashlight and a wig with footprints leading away toward Little League Park.
Peanut producers are invited to join an evaluation tour conducted by Extension Agronomist Ben R. Spears. The schedule starts at the Mason Courthouse at 9:00 a.m. on July 27, proceeds to the Comanche Courthouse at 1:30 p.m., and ends with a 3:30 p.m. meeting at the Texas Peanut Producers Board office in Gorman.
The board approved June bills and discussed Milk and Bread bids for the Lunchroom for 1971 72 with contracts set for August 9. Plans include moving the Superintendent and Tax Assessor offices into the old Band Hall with renovation to start in early August. The athletic budget for 1971 72 shows receipts of 48490 and disbursements of 18294. The Athletic Fund 1970 71 posted receipts 18801 and disbursements 18530, a 271 gain. A financial report covered Maintenance State and County and Interest and Sinking Funds for 1970 71.
David Smith of Cherokeehe is named junior high coach and teacher for Comanche. A graduate of Angelo State College, he has coached football as assistant and basketball as head coach in Cherokeehe for the past year. He is married with one child and will relocate to Comanche before August 15 while continuing studies at Angelo State.
The Proctor Reservoir Weather Station reports 24 hour measurements from 8 am to 8 am with daily highs and lows. Temperature readings include 74 75 100 73 74 and rainfall to date listed as 9.10 inches for 1971.
Charges of assault with a deadly weapon were filed Tuesday against James Earl Wier 24 of Clifton after a Friday Gustine grocery store holdup. Wier released from Texas Department of Corrections a week earlier also faces Federal charges linked to the Valley Mills Post Office robbery and Federal Firearms Act counts. The robber used a sawed off 22 calibre rifle in both incidents. Mrs. Wayne Caraway was forced to surrender an undetermined amount of money at the Gustine 7 11 store as officers pursued clues from license numbers.
Scott ish Rite Masons plan a 7 30 Friday meeting at Comanche National Bank to organize fellowship and advance Scottish Rite Masonry. Ottis Fields at the Justice Peace Office, County Courthouse, Damelconcluded.
Information from the Comanche City Police Department teletype and DPS in Austin tracked suspects from Valley Mills to Wier. Officers arrested Wier at 5 a.m. Saturday in Waco following the trail.
County Judge Fred Hall proclaims July 25 31 as Farm and Ranch Safety Week at the request of Ray Parrish Comanche County Farm Bureau president. The campaign focuses on safety tools seat belts fire extinguishers and crush resistant cabs to reduce ranching hazards and losses.
Franklin H. Loudermilk of Comanche will compete in the 1971 National High Power Rifle match at Camp Perry Ohio from August 16 to 24. The event features over 100 individual and team events and is expected to attract more than 2 000 competitors.
Truman Renshaw agricultural chairman announces hay exhibits at the Comanche County Fair August 26 28 in Bermuda sorghums sudan and alfalfa. Entries due August 3 require one bale per family for protein analysis with proceeds funding hay analysis efforts.
