Bill Bassham Extricates Buddies On Italian Front
On the Fifth Army front in Italy a German shell buried American infantrymen in a dugout. Technical Sergeant Bill Bassham led an ammunition platoon four hours under fire to rescue them using block and tackle and a rope around a tree. Bassham earned the Bronze Star for the operation. He is married to Natalea McKinzie of Comanche and is the son of Racami Bassham of Colorado City, Texas.

Comanche County Bonds Refunded For Major Saving
The Comanche County Commissioners Court approved refunding the courthouse bonds and sent them to the Attorney General’s Office in Austin. Refunding at lower rates will save about $10,000. old bonds retired and new ones issued at 2.44 percent on the first 30 bonds and 2.4 percent on the remaining 30 bonds of 3000 each. Original issue was 3 percent in 1939 for a $200,000 project. $14,000 of $74,000 bonds retired, leaving $60,000. County Judge H. H. Lockridge notes further savings from reducing other loans from 6 to 5 percent.
