County Board Sets Tax Rate and Rendition Values

Commissioners Court and Board of Equalization report little change to rendition sheets. Tax rate remains 64 cents, with a small 4 cent reduction in Road District No 1. Property values listed include tractors at 300 to 85 dollars, cattle at 25 per head, sheep 2, goats 1, autos 25 to 300, lines and railroad values per mile or per barrel, and farm land 10 to 3 per acre, all unchanged from last year.

Garrett Speaks Here Saturday Public address planned

Clyde Garrett candidate for Congress in the 17th District will speak on the courthouse lawn at Comanche Saturday at 5 45. He says he will answer charges from the opposition. Garrett, a former congressman from Eastland, will also speak in Dublin Saturday at 4 00 and in De Leon at 8 45 p m.

Biggs Completes Implement Sheds

J. C. Biggs Auto Parts, agent for the Ford Tractor and Ferguson system implements, has completed sheds and display rooms and hundreds of square feet of concrete floors for handling that part of his business. He started with a small garage years ago and has expanded to include a garage and service station, a wholesale and retail parts business, along with his implement and tractor trade.

Lt Wayne T Hatk of Sipe Springs died in a raid over Berlin on October 16 1943 while serving in the Air Forces. He enlisted January 1 1941 earned wings and flew as a B 17 crewman with the 8th Air Force. He is survived by his mother Mrs Ki Mitchell, a wife and brothers Leon Hardwick Richmond E O Hardwick Odessa and sisters Mrs Jim Millican Spring Mrs Alan Hughes Spring and Mrs O R Bankfig Spring.

Kenneth L Wem Wounded in Combat

Kenneth L Wem son of Mr and Mrs Clint Beattie was wounded in combat on July 8 in I1. He suffered leg and foot injuries and dental trauma. The message states he was awarded the Purple Heart. Wem has served in the Army for 18 months.

The Sidney public school opens the 1944-45 term on August 14 with intent from J B Cooper to have faculty on hand except Paul Jones as coach athletics and teaching. Superintendent says the Seem plans six weeks early to help in fall crop haf.

Captain Woodrow Allen Reported Killed in Action in France

Captain Woodrow Allen, former head of the Farm Security Administration in Comanche, Texas, wife Geral dine Slider, is reported killed in action in France. The claim came Monday via the wife of a first lieutenant in Allen’s company, who said he was with Allen when he died. official War Department confirmation had not yet been received.

Sergeant Daniels Wins Silver Star in Italian Action

Staff Sergeant Arthur A Daniels, husband of Comanche native Ruby Davenport, receives the Silver Star for gallantry in the Rapido River area Italy. He led a squad to take a German house, fired on two Germans, and positionally captured others, earning the Purple Heart as well. Also noted are Lt Raymond Patton injured in Normandy and Jim Coker returning to California.

Attending Convention Delegates to Dallas Roosevelt Meeting

A county convention met in the afternoon with a growing crowd as delegates debated the presidential preference. Y W Holmes led speeches supporting Roosevelt, with a proposed fourth term and a state convention unit. A long list of delegates cited includes Callaway, Caraway, Campbell, and many others.

Robert Eaton Named Postmaster

Robert Eaton, formerly a cashier at Comanche National Bank, was appointed postmaster and assumed charge on August 1. He succeeds J. R. Eanes, who served over ten years, the longest tenure among former postmasters. Eaton is a leading county man and his appointment has public approval.

Scouts Collect Paper Here Today

In cooperation with the National Paper Drive the Comanche Boy Scouts under Scoutmaster Jack Wheat will collect paper all day Friday August 5. Paper will be collected only on one day instead of two. residents are asked to tie up scrap paper and place it on their front porch for pickup.

Reverend Gray to Preach at Presbyterian Church with School Pictures

Rev W B Gray will fill his regular first Sunday appointment at the Presbyterian Church. Attendance Certificates for the Vacation School, delayed, are now on hand and will be distributed at Sunday School next Sunday. Kodak pictures taken for the school will be shown. Plans For Old Settlers Reunion In Sidney

Gospel evangelist G. S. Westbrook will preach a Friday night revival at Sidney Church of Christ. He aims to meet old friends and new, promises verse by verse teaching, and stresses First Century Gospel For Twentieth Century Needs. A. T. Norwood Called By Death in Comanche

Thomas Alexander Norwood a longtime Comanche resident died at home on Monday. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Indian Creek with Rev. Arch Swearengin officiating and burial followed in Indian Creek Cemetery. Born March 28 1876 he married Zephyr Brinson on June 14 1897 and had eight children. Surviving are several children grandchildren and siblings.

Old Settlers Reunion Plans At Lake Eanes Park

Plans advance for the Old Settlers Reunion on Friday August 18 at Lake Eanes Park with speakers including Congressman Sam Russell of Stephenville and former Congressman Clyde L Garrett of Eastland. Sam B Todd of Gustine will also speak and a county wide singing led by Charlie Nance will close the program. Leading singers from all sections are expected to attend.

Plans Complete For Livestock Barbecue Aug. 1

The Comanche County Livestock Association will hold a 4:30 p.m. meeting at Lake Eanes Park under the tabernacle with election of 1944-45 officers and directors to follow. A 6:30 p.m. barbecue will be served to members families and invited guests as part of the annual event.

Dayton Cunningham Injured In Action in the Southwest Pacific

Seaman First Class Dayton B. Cunningham, son of Mr and Mrs T D Cunningham of Comanche, was wounded in action in the Southwest Pacific while serving with American forces. He reports being hit by a bullet fragment near the temple and is now doing okay at a United States Fleet Hospital after about a year overseas.
