Governor Allan Shivers condemns federal control while backing state led initiatives. He argues Texans can pursue projects more cheaply with state support though he accepts some federal aid for large scale needs. The remarks reflect tensions over federalism and state autonomy.
Herb Petry Jr, 34, Carrizo Springs lawyer and businessman, tours Texas as a candidate for Congress at Large. He cites endorsements from Rep. John Lyle and Rep. Lloyd Bentsen Jr, and urges state-led programs in water and soil conservation, rural roads, education, and crime control while opposing federal taxation and control. He outlines an eight-point program to build a greater Texas.
The annual Homecoming at Sipe Springs will be held next Sunday July 27 with an all day program and noon dinner on the grounds.
