Promontory Park hosts a full day old fashioned celebration with a box lunch auction at noon, multiple booths, games, races, a 6:30 patriotic program, Miss Spirit of 76 crown, and 500 dollar prize drawings. Local groups including VFW Lions and Boy Scouts advocate participation.
Mrs Margie Jane Reed will transfer to the Comanche County Extension Agent role effective July 16. A former 4 H Club girl in Willacy and Crockett counties she earned Crockett County Gold Star Girl and National 4 H Congress awards. Reed holds a BS in Home Economics from Texas Tech University and most recently served in El Paso County managing youth nutrition programs with the Expanded Nutrition Program. Reed and her daughter Becky will move to Comanche in early July.
John Waggoner, 17, CHS graduate and Bob Hope Young American Essay Contest winner, recalls his White House visit. He met President Ford in the Oval Office, shook hands, and noted the President’s candid, honest manner and casual competence during the discussion with his father.
A two story frame dwelling in the 200 block of South Austin known as the scurry house burned early Monday morning. Occupied by Daniel Moreno Jr the fire was reported around 12:30 and firefighters battled the blaze for nearly two hours. Moreno escaped from a second story window and a 14 year old boy sleeping inside also fled.
