The City of Comanche offers free swimming lessons starting Monday July 12 under Miss Judy Gleaton and volunteers. Classes run daily 8 AM to 12 PM through July 23 except Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays with beginner to adult instruction and signups at the pool or via Judy Gleaton.
Comanche County Telephone Company warns that nuisance and obscene calls may lead to removal of service. Roy D Adams urges subscribers to heed the notice and cooperate with local police and sheriff's department to curb the problem.
The Corps of Engineers seeks a concessionaire to operate a marina at Proctor Lake. Interested parties should contact Garvin Hendon or Paul Gauntt. Proctor Lake hosts over 442000 visitors annually as part of the Fort Worth District system. Lewis Rambo earned a master of divinity from Yale last week in New Haven. his parents visited Connecticut for the ceremony. His family plans move to Chicago as he begins work on a doctorate at the University of Chicago.
A four church Summer Crusade starts Sunday July 1 with evening services at First United Methodist Church led by Rev H Grady James of First Presbyterian Church. Services at 7 pm feature music by Methodist Youth Choir directed by Terry Price. Youth social in Fellowship Hall. adults mingle in the parish lounge with refreshments by the Women’s Society of Christian Service. Participating churches are St Matthews Episcopal First Christian First Presbyterian and First United Methodist.
Postmaster Jim Carpenter announces July 1 changes in international mail rates. Surface mail to Canada and Mexico rises to eight cents per ounce up to 12 ounces, other countries 15 cents first ounce and 26 cents per ounce over one up to two. Air letter rates: Canada and Mexico 11 cents per ounce. Central and South America and Caribbean 17 cents per half ounce. all other countries 21 cents per half ounce.
The Proctor Reservoir Weather Station releases a 24 hour temperature and moisture report covering 8 am to 8 am. Data includes daily highs and lows, precipitation, and humidity levels for the region served by the station.
Mr and Mrs S E Sims of Route 1 Dublin mark their 67th anniversary on Saturday July 3 at the Proctor Community Center from 2 to 5 PM. Married July 3 1904 in Comanche County they now reside in Dublin after selling their Proctor area farm for Proctor Lake. They have three children 14 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
Deadline is June 30 for entries in the Comanche County Peanut Princess contest to be held July 10 at the CHS auditorium. Sponsor Comanche Jaycees. Winner advances to the state contest in Eastland in August. Local event starts 7 p.m. July 10 and leads into the Miss Texas pageant. Contact Richard Whitten burg, chairman.
Notice announces removal of the required financial statement for livestock feed and hay transport aid. Aid will not be granted if undue financial hardship exists. The County ASC Committee will use local knowledge to screen out applicants judged to be wealthy or have large nonfarm resources.
George Ells resigns after two years at Sidney High School to run a generator shop in Comanche. He coached junior high and high school boys football basketball volleyball baseball tennis and track, and girls basketball volleyball and tennis. He taught junior high science and high school health civics. His wife Barbara will stay as fifth and sixth grade teacher. sons Earl and Gary attend local schools.
Mr and Mrs Billy Hicks announce the opening of Hicks Florist at 504 W Central on Saturday July 3. The shop will operate seven days a week from 8 am to 5 pm and offers wedding, party, and funeral flowers with two free prize drawings at 3 pm.
Texans will face higher costs as new state taxes take effect July 1 1971 including an increase in general sales tax from 3 to 4 percent and motor vehicle sales tax from 3 to 4 percent. The cigarette tax rises from 5 to 18 cents per pack and new taxes apply to motor vehicle rentals beer liquor and corporate franchise tax.
Holiday observance in Comanche marks the 4th of July with many shops closed Monday July 5. Postmaster Jim Caprtener says the local post office will be closed and no mail will be delivered on rural routes or in the city.
The monthly Medicare doctor insurance premium rises starting July as part of an annual cost review. Brownwood Social Security manager Glen McNatt says the increase is necessary. July 3 checks will deduct 5.60 instead of 5.30. About 19.5 million people aged 65 plus are enrolled, with premiums covering half the protection cost and the rest funded by general revenues.
Col W E Speir director of the Texas Department of Public Safety estimates 48 lives will be lost in traffic accidents during the long holiday weekend. He warns hundreds or thousands injured and millions in monetary losses, urging drivers to take personal responsibility to reduce the toll.
