The Comanche County Old Settlers Reunion set for Thursday July 14 at Lake Banes to honor aged residents. Governor Hobby spoke to 1,200 at a Comanche governor race event. Comanche Lions Club backs the celebration with tours planned and band participation.
The Comanche Chief publishes a Political Edition July 14 to reach Lake Banes Old Settlers crowd. Trades Day on Tuesday July 5 attracts merchants, vegetables, poultry and stock, with closings Monday July 4 drawing larger turnout and a matinee at New Majestic Theatre.
Fort Worth campaign manager Hon E H Cowan spoke to a large Stephenville crowd detailing S T Brogdon’s platform. He touted Brogdon as a native Texan and schoolman sharing four main points including monthly old age pensions, repeal of Confederate pensions, annexation of Mexico for development, and curbing drunken driving by restricting liquor sales along highways to incorporated cities with police.
Lions Club agrees to work with City Council on naming streets and numbering houses in Comanche. A committee led by Dr. C. W. Gray, Clyde House, and J. C. Wilkerson will coordinate with the city and garden club may join. Homeowners likely to bear small costs for house numbers once assigned.
Mrs B W Speed and her daughter Alena of Waco were visitors in Comanche this week, staying with local residents and sightseeing around town.
The Comanche County Dairy Breeders Association reports brighter prospects for higher quality dairy cattle. Five registered Jersey bulls are used countywide, with sixty-two cows bred to them across groups. individuals may breed to these bulls for a $1.60 service fee. E C Seay of Sidney, the association president, called breeding prospects gratifying.
Karl Shock was installed as president of the Comanche Lions Club and launched a campaign to remove weeds and control mosquitoes. Mayor Hoff and Councilman Denny pledged city cooperation as workers cut weeds on streets and city property. Citizens urged to trim weeds around premises and vacant lots, with owners encouraged to hire help if needed.
Comanche Post Office receipts for the quarter ending June 30 1938 show a small rise over the same period in 1937 according to Postmaster J R Eanes. Only box rents and sale of postage stamps count toward receipts.
Comanche firms and nearly all interviewees will close Monday July 4 observing Sunday hours. Tuesday remains regular trades day with expected usual crowd. Signers include Roberson Sisters Western Auto Chief Dry Cleaners State National Bank Comanche National Bank and many local businesses.
A. J. Blevins Jr will open a confectionery in the Mrs George W Tate Building on the northeast square within two weeks. The interior is being remodeled and redecorated to be up to date with a full line of drinks ice cream and sandwiches available.
Jimmie Hulls Players present a two night tent theatre in Comanche on July 4 and 5 led by Skinnie Kimling and Tiny Hull with The Girl From Paris a three act comedy. Vaudeville features Uncle Evra and His Violin and Baby Diance. The show promises clean wholesome entertainment on the House Service Station lot.
The local Methodist Church will install a cooling system this week and will be air conditioned for all remaining summer services.
Funeral services are held this afternoon at 4:00 at Board Church for J. E. O'Dell a long time resident and notable county citizen. Mr. O'Dell died Thursday afternoon.
A crowd estimated over 5 000 heard W Lee O Daniel in Fort Worth Monday as candidates from his party urged support for his gubernatorial bid. Hillbilly musicians entertained the audience while other state candidates spoke briefly. O Daniel touted a $30 pension for seniors and explained tax matters before a Brownwood delegation escorted him to the Howard Payne stadium for a second appearance.
Absentee voting for the July 23 Democratic primary starts July 5 due to a Sunday holiday, with applications at County Clerk Holly Burton. Ballots may be marked and returned in person or by mail, last day July 20, 15 cent postage, ballots opened at 2 PM election day, voter list posted at polling places.
Bill Brown and his California family travel to Comanche to visit relatives and friends, staying to reconnect and share time with local acquaintances.
A general political speaking will be held at the band stand next Tuesday at 2 30 o clock inviting all district county and precinct candidates to talk. W D Jenkins will preside and candidates are urged to attend. Cards will be requested from those who wish to speak.

Texas Tax Journal cites D Charles Clarke on a Beacon Oil case where a $20,000 judgment against Beacon Oil & Refining Co. was paid the same day but no evidence shows the funds reached the State Treasury. Similar $10,000 and other judgments followed, with Cashier’s checks often not recorded as received by the state.

Hon Karl A Crowley, candidate for Governor, visited Comanche Tuesday morning. He met with Ex-Mayor M Coleman, J R Eanes and local businessmen and farmers at a cafe reception. Crowley, who resigned as U S Solicitor General to run, is seen as the New Deal choice supported by several old age pension groups.
The Comanche National Bank Building is being repaired and remodeled with the old cupola removed, west side steps added, and stonework cleaned. Erected in 1892 by the same firm that built the courthouse, workmen from the county building assisted. John Gage did wood work and stones were cut by Sullivan.
Donkey baseball games are coming to Comanche Thursday night July 17 and Friday night July 8. Ira Clemons, manager of the local softball park, promoted two donkey softball games last fall which proved popular. Manager Clemons says if you want real entertainment you should not miss these donkey games. W. O. W. captured the first half of the local softball race, ending Thursday night. The Wood men led by manager Webe Nor wood finished ahead with a two game margin. Arrangements for the second half will be made within the next few days.
A week only notice states ladies would be admitted free on Friday and Monday nights at local softball games. The offer applied solely to that week and not to any other Friday or Monday.
The Loraine well on the Laura Haile tract near Dobbs Hodge No 1, drilled by C M Joiner and associates, will be acidized this afternoon after swabbing and bail out. Geologists report porous saturated rock from coring supports a successful well. the well bottomed at 2706 feet and twelve hours were taken to lay pipe. Five thousand gallons of acid and 508 gallons of concentrated fluid will be used.
Lester Harris announces the Big Indian Gay Homecoming Pictie and Rodeo Carnival to be held July 9 in the Lester Harris pasture. The event features rodeo acts, a dance floor, music, picnics, and community gatherings with ample water and refreshments.
Mr and Mrs Walter Barreg attending the funeral of A Woe at Brady last week. The service drew family friends and local residents noting the passing of a longtime community member.
