Contract Awarded for 5 Miles of Highway 16 at Comanche
The State Highway Commission let a contract to Austin Southern Construction Company for 5.037 miles of Highway 16 from the Comanche railroad tracks to Taterhill Mountain Road. Total cost about $85,000,000 with $53,000 from state funds and $32,000 from WPA labor. It includes two concrete bridges over Indian Creek and Horse Creek. Construction starts within two weeks and the Comanche segment will be a full highway with caliche base and double asphalt top. the rest will be Unit One with grading drainage and caliche base. The firm is new, yet its predecessor built the Cisco underpass.

Mrs. Mattie York Claimed By Death
Mrs. Mattie J. York 79 longtime Comanche County resident died at her daughter’s home in Brownwood Tuesday morning. Funeral services were held at Board Church with Rev. E. R. Gordon officiating and burial in Board Church Cemetery. Born December 21 1862 in Houston County Texas she moved to Comanche County in 1882. Her husband J A York died in 1892. Survivors include three sons Claude Albert and Tom York of Comanche and three daughters Mrs T J Wilson Mrs Dean Bagley and Mrs Pitts.

The Fort Worth men injured in a late Friday crash 15 miles west of Comanche are Ernest T. Thieleman and D. P. Garland. Garland improved at St. Joseph's Hospital with a broken leg and cuts. Thieleman suffered minor injuries.

Mrs. A. C. Lawless aged 44 formerly Miss Lela Parkman died at De Leon January 19 after an extended illness. Funeral services were held January 20 at Higginbotham Funeral Home with Rev. D. D. Tidwell and Rev. Maurice Evanes officiating. Surviving are six sons Cecil Glenn Billie Bobbie and Raymond Grady two Fort Sam Houston residents and four sisters and four brothers. A. S. Dublin Opens WPA Lunchroom At Large School
Dublin’s public school system opened a WPA lunchroom serving 163 meals at 5 cents each on Wednesday. Superintendent R S Vestal reports some students and teachers were turned away due to higher demand, with plans to enlarge service. Dublin is the largest in the area to establish WPA lunches amid several schools in Comanche and Brown counties already serving lunches.
