John Newton Turner a former Abilene police officer and Fort Worth camp worker, was killed near Buffalo Gap 12 miles south of Abilene. Loyce Gooch confessed to shooting Turner after a gun scuffle. Gooch wounded in the arm. Turner survived by wife Addis and their two year old son David Morris Turner. burial at Bethel Cemetery. Hollis Sibert Dies After 15 Day Illness
Hollis Sibert aged 15 son of Clyde Sibert of the Dudley Ranch died at a German hospital after a two week illness. Funeral services were held at Stag Creek by the Church of Christ with interment in the local cemetery. He was a Van Dyke School student living with his grandparents Mr and Mrs R A Sibert. Survived by his father and stepmother and a nine month old half sister Norma Jo.

Twelve Selectees to Train at Eowood Army Camp
Eighteen men under the Selective Service Act left Comanche by bus for Dallas to be inducted into the U S Military service and sent to Camp Bowie Brownwood for training. Several were held over for February 12. a group failed physicals and were placed on the deferred list. The remaining 12 traveled by train to Brownwood for Camp Bowie training.

Democrat Star Route Extended To Serve Dupree And Surrounding Areas

College Girl Killed On Railroad Bridge
Miss Gloria Hawker a 19 year old Southwestern University Georgetown student was killed January 12 when struck by a southbound M E and T passenger train while crossing a trestle over the San Gabriel River near Georgetown. She and three classmates were crossing the bridge as the train neared and Hawker tried to run for the end but died. Her home was in Teague and she was a friend of Nancy Jo Wilkerson of Comanche and a niece of Mrs. W C Streety of DeLeon.

A $30,000 fertilizer mixing plant owned by the Southwestern Peanut Association opened for operation in Gorman this week. Dick Weekes, manager of the new plant, says 10 men will be employed during the rush season with two or three year round.

A E Cook Dies At Home Here In Comanche County
A E Cook, 66, died at his North Comanche home after illness. Funeral services were held at Comanche Funeral Home with Rev J D Smoot officiating and burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Born February 20 1874 in Homer Louisiana he came to Texas at 20, lived in Eolian Stephens County, married Margaret Loving January 7 1900, and had seven children. He moved from Stephens to Eastland Pioneer then to Comanche in 1922 where he remained until death.

Fire After Explosion Claims San Angelo Woman
Miss Faye Murphree, 27, daughter of Cody Murphree of Comanche, burned to death in a room explosion caused by a gas ignition from a heating stove in San Angelo. She died after trying to escape via a window at 7:45 a.m. The room and belongings were destroyed. neighbors and first responders failed to rescue her. She was born April 23, 1913 in Comanche County and is survived by her father and several half siblings.

Reports say Mrs. Bitty Moppin formerly of Suez died at age 60 after her body was found in the yard at her Oklahoma home. Her brother Craig Johnson, who shared the residence, returned from a nearby town and discovered her body following a yard cleaning.

Cotton Belt to Quit Hamilton Rail Line Abandonment Planned
The 33 mile Cotton Belt line between Hamilton and Gatesville will be abandoned February 6 1941 per the Hamilton Record Herald. Mayor James says no effort will be made to retain the road and that either Comanche or Gatesville will be Hamilton official railroad point as the town loses its railroad. Hamilton will become one of the largest towns in Texas without rail service.
