Mobile Homes Rise as Affordable Housing Option
The piece notes a shift to mobile homes for affordable housing amid rising conventional home costs. It cites 1969 Michigan permits at 54 percent, 1979 mobile home production surpassing 499000 units, and rural areas housing roughly one third of buyers. It describes size gains, modern amenities, and favorable credit terms. It also cites HUD findings: buyers are highly immobile, resale under 10 percent, most buyers are satisfied, and monthly payments differ little from conventional homes.
