Comanche County Junior Livestock Show Opens With 434 Entries

The 36th annual Comanche County Junior Livestock Show underway with 434 head from 261 exhibitors. Judging starts Thursday morning for Breeding Beef Heifers and Steers, with multiple judges named for cattle, sheep, and goats. The 13th annual two day auction features market animals Friday night at McDougal’s Auction Barn and Dairy Heifers Saturday noon at the Livestock Center.

Vandals Damage Dublin Cemeteries Amid Ongoing Vandalism

Senseless vandalism struck the New Dublin Cemetery on Saturday night with twenty one monuments overturned and several markers broken. It marks the second such destruction in two years, following last year’s Old Dublin Cemetery incident. locals plan a Monday meeting to discuss the damage.

Comanche County Farm Income Hits Record 1970 Total

Comanche County’s agricultural income for 1970 totaled $32,875,533, a record high, with peanuts leading cash receipts at $9,199,125 and milk production up to $5.2 million. Other gains included fruits and vegetables, nursery produce, peanut hay, pecans, calves, hogs, eggs, goats, horses, and turkeys. Government payments fell by $63,448 from 1969 but remained $307,867. The Texas Power and Light Company compiled the report based on local agricultural input.

Pancake Supper Opens Jaycee Week in Comanche

Comanche Jaycees host a pancake supper Friday January 22 at the Junior High Cafetorium from 5:39 pm to 7 am benefiting the Special Education Department. Admission is 1 for adults and 59 cents for children with proceeds assisting school programs.

Hearing Set For 80 Intervenors In Comanche School Tax Suit

District Judge Byron McClellan schedules a January 29 hearing in Comanche to decide if 80 property owners may intervene in the suit challenging the Comanche Independent School District tax plan for 1970. Original plaintiffs claim the plan is unequal. injunctions have previously limited the case to the initial group.

Trustee Election Set For April 3 1971 At High School

The school board scheduled a trustee election for April 3 1971 in the High School Homemaking Cottage to fill two three year terms. Incumbents Elton McDonald and Wayne Stewart may seek reelection. Candidates may file by petition with five voters or by written request on the board secretary’s form. Qualifications include age over 21, a qualified voter, one year state residency and six months in the district. Filing closes March 3 1971 with Wayne Stewart at Ned’s Grocery for forms.

Elvin Brownlee formerly of Sweetwater has purchased Fisher Reese's butane interests and leads Elvin's Butane. A De Leon High School and North Texas State graduate, Brownlee will keep Reese's policies and staff, with Linda and two young sons in residence and the Brownlees attending First Christian Church.

Comanche ISD Tax Office Advances Uniform Appraisals Plan

The Comanche Independent School District moves toward mass appraisal to equalize property values across the district. The plan uses current maps and forms, building cost schedules, depreciation of older structures, and total appraised values showing land plus building value to justify assessments to taxpayers and the Board of Equalization.

Rip Case Named Chemist at Local Aflatoxin Lab

Roger Rip Case has been named chemist at the Aflatoxin Lab near Industrial Park on the De Leon highway. He is married to Sue Russell and is a Tarleton State College biology graduate. The Texas Agricultural Department runs the lab, which tests peanuts for toxins for resale. The program started four years ago with 43 such labs in the United States, mostly in Texas. The office operates 9 to 10 months yearly. When the plant closes, Case will work in De Leon assisting Charles Rogers on Lesser Corn Stalk Borer research. Mrs Sandy Boston is a secretary and technician at the lab.
