Comanche County poll tax payments reached about 2800 by Thursday morning as J. E. Lightfoot announces the voting privilege deadline will be next Thursday January 31. He notes past voting year payments and warns the January 31 date marks the last day to pay 1945 taxes without penalty.
Comanche National Bank announces a good year for 1945 with a new deposit record. All officers and directors are re-elected, a 10 percent stock dividend is issued, and 10000 dollars added to undivided profits. The bank shows 2937706.26 in total resources. Officers include W C Chilton president and K L Macon cashier. Directors include T J Williams and W C Chilton.
The State National Bank of Comanche held its annual stockholders and directors meeting Tuesday. President E. E. Anthony announced deposits reached a historic peak for 1945 and an 8 percent stock dividend was paid. Norris, a returning Navy veteran, joined the bank staff. $7,000 was added to surplus and $1,500 to undivided profits. Officers include E. E. Anthony, L. C. Durham, Dr. E. E. Anthony Jr., Boyd Anthony, and others.
Cc. C. Fisher of Comanche announces his candidacy for sheriff of Comanche County subject to Democratic Primaries. A 46 year old native, he grew up in Beattie and has lived in Comanche twenty years. He formerly farmed in Beattie and ran a gasoline business before leasing it. He has a son Vernon in the Navy with the Pacific Fleet and seeks votes and support ahead of the primaries.
Eanes argues for a flood control dam on the Leon River near Proctor to cost Comanche little and provide an auxiliary water supply for three towns. The project would benefit Comanche, Frath, Hamilton, and Coryell Counties, with options including a northwest lake site that protects bottom land, bridges, and roads and could be cheaper than a Brownwood pipeline.
Burl H. Wagnon a 50 year old stock farmer from Sidney Route 1 announces his candidacy for Commissioner of Precincts No. 1. A native of Comanche County he has returned to his farm two years ago after living elsewhere. He says he has paid taxes in the precinct all his life and plans to meet residents personally while soliciting votes.
Charlie V. Biggs 40 announces his run for County Commissioner Precinct No 1. A Comanche County native, he has lived in Precinct 1 fourteen years and worked with the State Highway Department and county roads eleven years. He owns a Cotton Grove farm and pledges impartial road care and full dedication to duties, asking voters for support.
Rev J C Lambrides, World War II frontline chaplain and former Maryland church pastor, is named pastor of the First Baptist Church of Comanche. The preacher, now Houston resident, will lead services this Sunday. He and his Texas wife have two children, Faith 16 and a 14 year old son. Victory Clothing Drive opens today to aid overseas needy, with donations urged at post offices and schools through next week. Chairman Chaffin emphasizes broad community participation. Petroleum refining is noted as Ohio’s leading industry.
The Service Drug Store promotes free monogramming for stationery, billfolds, and pens. Owner C. L. Huett says the machine has driven higher stationery and leather goods sales over eight months, with strong demand around Christmas. He predicts similar gains for other druggists. Also noted is R C Holman’s promotion to assistant engineer for the Southern Pacific Railroad across Texas to Louisiana.
Roy Dabney of Comanche, a 35 year old World War II veteran with 26 months in the European Theater, announces his bid for county clerk subject to Democratic primaries. A native of Comanche County and Whitville area, he is a Blanket High School and Draughons Business College graduate who served three years as deputy tax assessor-collector before joining the armed forces. He plans to meet voters regularly and will have his name appear weekly in The Chief’s announcement column.
The quarterly conference met at the local Methodist Church on Saturday January 19 with Presiding Elder A S Gafford of Brownwood in charge.
Jimmy Carpenter is on a 17 day furlough from Camp Swift visiting his parents Mr and Mrs John Carpenter.
Clarence Jones became sole owner of Frozen Food Lockers in Comanche by purchasing Harvey Durham's stake. Jones had partnered with Durham since last September after they bought the plant from W. C. McHorse and brother, founders of the firm. The sale price was not announced but the original investment exceeded $30,000.
J. E. Lightfoot, county tax assessor collector, backs the Junior Livestock Show held here today. A catalogue published for the event includes an advertisement from county officers, but Lightfoot’s name was mistakenly omitted from the list.
The Eleventh Annual Junior Livestock Show begins Friday morning January 25 at Sutton Dudley Barn in North Comanche near the Rev J D Smoot residence. Entries are expected to be high quality with FFA and 4 H judging starting at 9 am under judges W W Reed of Stephenville and E L Pierson of Comanche. Superintendent lineup includes C M Caraway Sr Gail Dudley Walter J Fritts Clarence Albin A Caraway and J B Cooper. Program features judging of fat barrows capons lambs steers and a parade of champions with awards for grand and reserve champions and other blue ribbon entries.
The Comanche Chamber of Commerce offers a free school bus ride from the west side of the Comanche County Courthouse to Sutton Dudley Barn for the 11th Annual Junior Livestock Show today. Buses depart the courthouse every hour starting at 9 o’clock, with a return trip after the show.
Gustine farmer Cliff Pettit helps sponsor the Junior Livestock Show in Comanche today. Pettit placed a half page ad in the catalogue to fund show prizes, but the advertisement was omitted by mistake.
Comanche County cattle owned by Barret Hereford Ranch Dudley Bros and T J Williams sold well at the Mid-Texas Hereford Association sale in Stephenville. Donna Aniva 32nd grand champion female sold for 1200, Prince Domino 14th grand champion bull also 1200, reserve Bocardo Masterpiece 1000, and Texas Queen first in senior heifer division at 450. Overall 37 females averaged 294 and 28 bulls 359. John M Robertson named County Service Officer succeeding resignations. will train six weeks in Waco and split duties between Comanche and De Leon.
Mrs. J. B. Arthur of Comanche broke her arm last Friday in a fall while tending chickens. This marks the second misfortune in weeks following a fire that damaged her home about three weeks prior.
W B Nowlin of De Leon announces candidacy for the State Legislature in a district including Comanche and Mills counties. He notes carrying both Comanche boxes and rural boxes in prior races and highlights 15 years in the advertising business with a wide spread, stateside reach. He pledges to provide the best service and asks for votes and influence.
W. D. Randals has returned home to his parents Mr. and Mrs. Tuttle Randals after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army.
