Virgil Chaffin announces a county clothing drive from January 25 to January 31 to aid needy overseas. All public schools and post offices serve as collection centers with boxes for used clothing shoes and bedding placed in the Comanche post office lobby.
Mr and Mrs C S Allen near Lake Banes in Comanche County mark forty five of fifty years in the area with a golden wedding anniversary. Guests include Mr and Mrs Guy Allen and sons from Dallas and Mr and Mrs J J Keeter plus four children from Throckmorton. Four grandchildren could not attend. among them Ann Allen of Dallas and Capt C M Keeter Lt E H Keeter and Pfc Amart Keeter in service.
Mrs. M. S. Elms a long time Comanche resident who moved to California about a year ago died in Los Angeles January 6. Funeral services were January 8 at Armstrong Family Mortuary with Rev. Wilshire Martin officiating. Interment followed at Inglewood Park Cemetery. She earlier lived in Zephyr during the 1909 storm and later moved to Comanche. She was active in the Methodist Church and well known locally.
H W Allen of Hamilton announces re election bid for a fourth term to lead the 52nd Judicial District which includes Comanche Hamilton Coryell and Bosque Counties. He is described as a capable young lawyer and leading district attorney.
The Comanche Circuit holds its first Quarterly Conference at Indian Creek Church this Saturday January 19. Rev A B Gafford will speak at 11 am followed by Conference at 1 30 pm. A basket lunch is served. Officials from all circuit churches are urged to attend. John W Tickner pastor.
The Episcopal Church invites all to attend an Inquirers Class conducted by Rev. Richard Hayes each Sunday evening at 5 30. The regular evening service follows at 7 00 and there is no obligation for participants.
Comanche and Stephenville ranchers Gail Dudley Tom Dudley Walter Jack Barret and Walter M Durham Jr join Charles Nesbett at the National Livestock Show in Denver Colorado this week. The sale and show draw entries from nearly every state and often fetches the nation’s top cattle prices at auction.
Construction begins on the Comanche Lumber Company building north of the Santa Fe freight depot and east of the Texas Peanut Company. Danforth Wilkerson, son of local residents, will manage after fourteen years in lumber yards and service in the armed forces. The company is owned by Charles G. Cryer of Waco.
R W Pettijohn of Basgett announces candidacy for Commissioner Precinct No 3 subject to Democratic primaries. A lifelong farmer from Hazel Dell he is married with five sons including one in the Army and one in the Navy. He notes support from local citizens and pledges to serve to the best of his ability.
Comanche County voters who are veterans of World War II may vote without exemption certificates or register. State Comptroller George H. Sheppard advised that election judges may ask for discharge papers, but no certificate is required. Voting without a poll tax remains for those not discharged within 18 months of an election.
Mr and Mrs Larry J Kittle observe their golden wedding anniversary with an open house at W C Chilton home on Sunday afternoon January 13 Guests from town county and other parts of the State attended The couple wed near Comanche and now reside at Billy Montgomery home The reception featured gold decorations and a register for guests to sign with many congratulatory messages received from distant friends.
Sgt. Harold Rambo son of Mr and Mrs Roy Rambo Comanche has returned from fourteen months in the Pacific where he served in the Philippines and observed Manila wreckage. He was discharged at Fort Sam Houston and will move his wife and baby from Stephenville to Comanche once a house is found. He will work for Higginbotham Bros in the wholesale division in Comanche.
Gayle Rippetoe son of County Judge and Mrs O E Rippetoe returns from Europe after over three years overseas. He served in India and Egypt before his return. He plans to work in Comanche for a time and may later attend Texas Tech. A De Leon High School graduate.
Bob W. Wetzel of Comanche and San Angelo was killed April 7 1945 over Hanover Germany while serving as a B 17 tail gunner on his sixth mission. He shot the German jet but the aircraft crashed the B 17 tail. He leaves a five month old son Bobby Wayne Jr and is survived by several siblings. Wetzel was a Co manche High School football star and a former Indian athlete.
Miss Alice McClelland will address the First Presbyterian Church next Sunday at 11 o’clock. Daughter of the late Dr Brainard Taylor McClelland and a long time missionary in Mexico, she will share educational work she has led and the tragic experiences she recounts with humor. The public is invited.
Comanche High School gym hosts a basketball doubleheader with Comanche All-Stars facing Camp Bowie next Wednesday night January 23. Bowie beat Comanche 45 34 in Camp Bowie Field House last Wednesday, led by 6 6 Leo Brandt. An earlier Willis squad outscored Fort Worth Plastite Engineers 34 9 here last Saturday. A girls game between Comanche and Gustine will precede the men at 1 o clock.
Oscar J. Fox and C. J. Robinson Jr. present a lecture concert at Comanche High School on Tuesday January 22 at 10 a.m. Admission is twenty five cents for adults with proceeds toward a moving picture projector for the schools.
Ned Stewart, who ran a suburban grocery here before joining the Seabees in 1942, will open Ned's Grocery and Market on Friday January 18 six blocks out on the De Leon Highway. He plans a full line of groceries and fresh and cured meats with station products added later.
Edward L. Hallford 72 long-time Comanche County resident died Jan 11 at Albert Cunningham’s home in Comanche. He married Henrietta Cunningham in 1898 and survived by two children Anla E. Hallford and Alda Burks, plus two brothers. Funeral at South Leon Baptist Church Newburg with interment in Newburg Cemetery.
Charlie Biggs of Comanche announces he may run for Commissioner Precinct No 1. Sir Harold Ray Burks, on leave visiting his parents, heads to Boston to board the USS Boston for sea duty.
Comanche ranchers plan to attend the Mid-Texas Hereford Association sale and show on January 21 at Stephenville. The prize list totals 9385 dollars with entries from W B Sarret Hereford Ranch Comanche Dudley Bros Ranch and T J Williams Ranch. Col Earl Gartin will auctioneer the sale beginning at 1 p.m. and William Robertson will judge the cattle in eight classes.
Mrs. Mattie L. Toby 87 died Saturday night from injuries in a Hamilton Gustine highway crash. Funeral held Monday at First Baptist Gustine with nine children surviving and interment in Oakwood Cemetery. Survivors include J N Boyd Gustine and seven others across Texas and Arizona. The Tobys moved to Comanche in 1906 and lived in Gustine most of their years.
Mr and Mrs BK H Henry of Comanche attended a Hico Chamber of Commerce banquet Tuesday night honoring returned veterans. More than 100 people were present. Henry a former Hico resident who spent over three years overseas was among the speakers.
Albert Mills 82, long time Newbury farmer, moved to South Texas 22 years ago, died Monday at his Derby home. Services were held there. Attendees from Comanche included J. Sid, John Burton, and John Pogue. Survived by former wife Oda Neely and siblings Ora Mills, John Campbell Mills, A. L. Mills, Willie Mills, Holmes Mills, Weldam Mills.
Mrs. Charlie Isham 72 of Comanche County died at home near Gustine January 12 after a three year illness. Funeral services were at First Baptist Gustine with pastors from Comanche and Blanket officiating. Interment in Oakwood Cemetery. She was born Laura Chancellor March 15 1873 in Nacogdoches County. Survived by husband Charlie Isham and nine children in Energy Gustine Fort Worth and other towns, plus a sister in Fort Worth. All children attended the services.
