Tax assessor P. A. Pettit reports slow payments with about 55 percent of assessed taxes paid by January 31, down from 76 percent a year earlier. Totals show $76,192.61 collected to date versus $96,877.66 last year, from a total assessment of $148,921.30. Taxes paid by February 1 incur penalty and interest.

Mrs. J. C. Nichols Dies at Home Near Sidney
Mrs. J. C. Nichols known as Grandma Nichols died at her Sidney area home January 3 after years of illness. She was born near Fairfield January 4 1868 and married J. C. Nichols in 1885. Bannie Cawthon, 70, a seasoned farmer, died at his home in Hasse on Monday after an illness. Funeral services were held at the residence by Rev. Gordon Barrett, with interment in Sardis Cemetery. Born November 26, 1870 in Tennessee, he moved to Texas in 1927 and to Hasse in 1933. He married Mary Worley in youth. she died in 1926. Survived by one daughter, Lillie Mae Davis of Comanche, and a brother in Tennessee.
