William C. Chilton directs the 1942 drive for Defense Bonds and Stamps with a per person target of about 22.15 dollars based on 20 000 residents. Families should aim for at least 88 60 in Bonds and Stamps, with many needing more to cover nonparticipants. Bonds are sold at post offices, banks, and local businesses.
Comanche High School beat German Panzers 38 14 to start the 1942 District 12 A race at the local gym. Swann Coker and Hall led the Indians, who built a 14 4 first quarter lead and a 19 8 halftime margin.
Mark Boone a longtime Comanche resident now living in Cherokee was injured in a motor crash near Dublin when a tire blew out. His companions Rev Swope and Mrs Swope were seriously hurt. All four were taken to Dublin hospital for treatment. Boone was en route to Dallas for Homer Bowers funeral.
Mr and Mrs George Walker and their family spent the week end in County visiting relatives.

Three 14 year old Dallas youths robbed A. C. McCurdy's Democrat store in Mills County at rifle point, taking about $118 plus cigarettes and bread. Sheriff Wid Spivey pursued them near Comanche, firing on the fleeing car before the youths abandoned it and surrendered. They were jailed in Comanche and face juvenile court proceedings.
Roberson Sisters announce a sale on Fall and Winter dresses and suits with a one cent sale on hats. Dresses and suits are offered at a one quarter reduction despite higher wholesale prices. Advertisement details appear on another page.
The Comanche Chamber of Commerce asks all to buy meeting tickets by Saturday to help plan refreshments, with tickets also available at the door. Proceeds go to the Red Cross, and a 50 cent ticket is encouraged for all, whether or not they attend. Miss Thelma Barrett returned to Marshall after visiting locals.
Taxpayers have eight days left to pay property taxes before penalties and interest apply after January end. War conditions urge payment of State, County, Local and poll taxes to avoid collection actions. Dallas launches a campaign to collect delinquent taxes. county and state taxes arrive fairly well, with city and school taxes in Comanche payable at City Hall.
In Comanche County, only 1200 poll tax receipts had been issued this week per P A Pettit, Assessor-Collector. Voters must pay by midnight Saturday January 31 to be eligible for the 1942 elections. Adults 21 on January 1 1941 and under 60 then are taxed. fee is $1.75.
Federal vehicle stamps arrive at Comanche County post offices and go on sale January through February. The $2.09 stamp expires June 30 1942 and a $5 stamp will cover the rest of 1942. Fines up to 1000 dollars for operating without a stamp. About 5500 vehicles subject to the new requirement.
J. O. Gore comes home from a visit to Morton to see his mother Mrs. C. E. Moore who has been ill.
The Comanche Chamber of Commerce plans a courthouse supper next Tuesday to raise funds for the County Red Cross. Tickets cost 50 cents, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross Fund and attendees receiving a supper and a program. Dr. Troy Cauley of Fort Worth will address the gathering.
Sealed proposals for construction of 22 619 miles of flexible base and asphalt surface on Hiway 16 South from Comanche to the county line will be received at the State Highway Department until 9 a m Friday January 30. Details of the bid may be obtained from an advertisement in The Chief.
The WPA project to improve 6.7 miles of the Democrat road from Comanche City limits southwest will reopen January 26. Sponsored by Comanche County, it will run about three months employing 31 workers with a monthly payroll of 1366 dollars. Laborers report 7 30 a.m. at the courthouse in Comanche to Assistant Superintendent Brooks B McPherson.
Novit's Department Store marks its second anniversary in Comanche with a Dollar Sale starting today. The advertisement notes discounts up to one-half off and Defense Stamps with every $2 purchase. Manager Harry Melowsky, in charge since opening, says 1941 surpassed 1940 despite wartime conditions.
The Chamber of Commerce Red Cross Benefit Dinner requests food donations on Saturday and Monday at the Chamber building and Tuesday at the courthouse north door.
