The first 6,000 selective service draftees are set to report to Camp Bowie near Brownwood for the Thirty-Sixth Division. Inductees will arrive Jan. 13 at 325 per day, to be received, clothed, inspected, and classified at the Camp Bowie Reception Center. Each man will undergo basic training and personal interviews to assign him to an appropriate unit and specialty.
Lew ros, Chief Machinist Mate from the Fort Worth Naval Recruiting Office, will be at the Comanche Post Office every Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to accept enlistment applications. Applicants must be 17 to 31 years old and bring birth certificates per C. L. Williams of the Fort Worth office.
Alvin Richmond of Blanket married Miss Lillie Gaines daughter of County Treasurer J G Gaines of Brownwood Saturday night at Mrs Susie M Evatt home in May The couple were attended only by close family and a few friends The ceremony read by Rev D L Barnes used an improvised altar of palms and pink gladioli The bride a beige ensemble with pink accessories carried a mother’s handkerchief The groom a Blanket resident and Brown County School official The reception featured Opal Gaines at the refreshment table The couple plan a short wedding trip and will reside in Blanket
John Burton of Comanche topped the Fort Worth market Tuesday with 14 yearlings averaging 655 pounds at 910.85 per hundred. He also sold a 1155 pound cow for 7.00 per hundred.
Following elections in several communities, 1941 AAA Committee men were announced by ACA Secretary J. W. Roberson Jr. The list includes chairmen, vice chairs, and members for Comanche De Leon Gustine Proctor Sidney and Sipe Springs with district routes and full names.
Retired farmer Jake Stark, 69, died at his home January 3 after months of illness. Funeral held at Comanche Funeral Home with Rev. Gordon Barrett. Burial in Stone Cemetery. Grandsons Merlin Northcutt, Howard Northcutt, Dick McGuire, and Tull McGuire served as pallbearers. Numerous out of town relatives attended from Texas and California. sons-in-law listed. Stark born near Proctor and owned Leon River farm interests.
Adeline Clawson born December 26, 1877 in Coryell County. Married C. C. Studeville on November 6 1892. She joined the Baptist Church young and remained faithful. Died January 5 1941 at daughter Vernie Vanwinkle’s home in Gustine Texas at age 63 years 1 month 9 days. Survived by eight of ten children, nineteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. Burial and funeral details not listed.
Total deposits in Comanche two banks rose to 927 375.96 on December 31 1940 from 913 297.86 a year earlier a gain of 14 078 10 Postal Savings deposits push the town total to about 40 000 bringing Comanche overall to 967 375 96 Gustine First State Bank deposits reached 77 927 44 up from 70 108 63 a year ago a rise of 7 818 81 Loans at Gustine total 34 693 85 versus 28 241 25 a year earlier.
January 15 has been designated for the next CCC Camp enlistment leaving Comanche for the camps. Comanche County quota is twelve with ten boys already signed up. Eligible youths meeting requirements should see Mrs Ernestine Arthur at her office in the Gille Building on Brownwood Street.
The 1941 Comanche County Junior Livestock Show for F F A boys and 4 H Club members is tentatively scheduled for Thursday March 6 according to J R Eanes secretary of the Comanche County Livestock Association The show will precede the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show and details will be announced later.
Carnes Food Market near Comanche purchased a Hobbs trailer, the latest model from Hobbs, featuring sleeping quarters behind the driver seat with electric lights for two drivers. The trailer will haul fruit and vegetables long distances from the Lower Rio Grande Valley, California, and Florida. Harry Cloud leads the hauling operation.
Census data show 1211 bales ginned in Comanche County for the 1940 crop prior to December 13, up from 1053 bales in 1939. The figures are provided by Joe Marshall, special agent for the U S Bureau of Census, Commerce Department.
The Shiloh Singing Convention will meet at Wilson on Sunday January. C D Woods says it will be an all day affair with a noon basket meal. Everyone is invited to attend this community event.
W F Elkins 93 former Comanche resident dies at daughter Mrs John Sherman Plainview. Funeral services held at Comanche Methodist Church with Rev J D Smoot and Rev E R Gordon. Burial Oakwood Cemetery. Survived by nine children, 17 grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Comanche natural gas users received retroactive rebates on last month’s bills as new rates took effect. The tiered rates start at 75c per MCF for the first 3000 feet and step down to 35c for usage over 75,000 feet, with a 10 percent late payment penalty and a $1 minimum monthly charge per meter.
Bargain rates for daily papers will be withdrawn within a few days if the usual custom of these publications is followed. Chief Subscriptions notes the label on your Chief indicating renewal if the figures show 1940 or any previous year to avoid missing a single copy.
The office invites producers to apply for participation in the 1941 Range Program with minor changes in evidence of control and a full description from 1940. W. C. Carroll Magness aged 65 died at his Comanche home after a year of illness. Funeral at Comanche Church of Christ with Elder Herbert L. Newman officiating. Interment Oakwood Cemetery. He spent decades in public road work and public service. Survived by wife Lena Burleson and seven children, plus brothers and sisters. He was a member of the local Church of Christ.
Rev. Sam Taylor of San Saba will preach at the local Baptist Church Sunday, per the supply committee. He will deliver sermons in both the morning and evening services.
The Comanche Chamber of Commerce plans its annual banquet for January 30 at the high school gym. The new board of directors will be announced and voters will see the full member list with a star marking current directors. Details on the election will follow. Comanche aims to secure a blackeyed pea market and leads Texas peanut marketing in Southwest Growers Association data.
Sealed bids will be received at the State Highway Office in Austin for constructing 5,037 miles of Highway No 16 from the railroad tracks in Comanche south to Taterhill Mountain road. Within Comanche city limits the road will be complete with caliche base and double asphalt surface. the rest is an initial Unit One project with grading drainage structures and caliche base. The City and County have secured right of way, and a new course may be used in parts.
Dr. Mark L. Stricklin, 53, a well known Clarendon physician and brother of Mrs. C. W. Williams of Comanche, died in an automobile accident Monday near Clarendon after a call at the JA Ranch. Funeral at Comanche Baptist Church. Interment in Gustine Union Cemetery. Survived by sister Mrs. Pat Long of Houston and sister Mrs. Williams.
The Comanche Garden Club will meet with Mrs Walter Durham Sr next Thursday January 16. At the last meeting Mrs E S Fagan was elected president replacing Mrs J B Allcorn who resigned Mrs D Charles Clarke was elected vice president and Mrs John D Waring Jr second vice president.
On Friday night January 17 the regular quarterly meeting of quartets from Comanche and surrounding counties will be held in the Beattie Auditorium. Many good quartets are expected and all who enjoy good singing are invited to attend.
Private Charles M. Ehlinger of Devine in Service Company 141st Infantry 36th Division died from injuries after a late Saturday night crash near Cross Plains. Five fellow soldiers from the 141st Inf Service Co were injured, none seriously, when their car skidded on a rain slick curve and overturned while returning to Camp Bowie after a dance.
The Local Draft Board announces seventeen men selected for induction. They must report at 3:00 p.m. January 21, 1941, to the Comanche board for transport to the Dallas induction station. Participants include Wallace Wink Field and others listed.
Joe McIlroy of the Blue Gin announces in this issue that the ginning season will close next week on or before Friday January 17. He says he extended the closing date to accommodate every cotton grower and finish promptly.
