Local Man Receives Wings at Brooks Field in Large Class
Darden McCollum 22 year old son of Burley and Mrs. McCollum of McCamey and grandson of Mrs. J W McCollum of Comanche received his silver pilot’s wings at Brooks Field on Sunday December 13 as part of one of the largest Army Air Forces Gulf Coast Training Center classes. He volunteered May 8 1941 and served at Fort Bliss before transferring to the Air Corps for flight training culminating at Brooks Field now a second lieutenant.

Prisoner of War Cpl. Joseph J. Johnson Named
Cpl. Joseph J. Johnson 26 son of Mrs. Leona Seward Comanche is a Japanese prisoner per War Department notice. Johnson served in the Philippines during the Bataan Corregidor surrender and volunteered October 16 1940. His last letter reached his mother in November 1941 after Comanche High School class of 1936 graduation. He was a gun mechanic in the U S Air Corps.
